Westbrook - Helen Elizabeth (Smith) Martin, 93, died on May 23, 2024, at Mercy Hospital, Portland. She was born on September 13, 1930, in Westbrook, to the late Arthur H. and Laurette (Chayer) Smith. Helen graduated from Westbrook High School in 1948. She worked as a telephone operator at New England Telephone Company until she married. Once her children were all in school, she began working as a bookkeeper at Federal Foods, Windham. She moved to Portland, continuing to work at Federal Foods on Congress St., until the store closed. She went back to work for New England Telephone as a directory assistance operator, where she stayed until she retired in 1994. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Church. Helen enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cross stitching and making birthday cards for her family. She looked forward to her visits with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, especially during the holidays. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Kathy Martin, a brother Donald J. Smith; sisters, Patricia Bullerwell and Jeannine Pelletier. She is survived by sisters, Muriel Belanger, Lorraine Belanger, and Claire Cameron; her daughters, Susan Viherek (Steve), Donna Stevens (Jim); Jean Carrier (Michel) and Sally Martin. 10 grandchildren, Bruce Young, Anthony and Amanda Martin, Joshua and Elizabeth Carrier, James Tirrell, Seamus and Ryan Stevens, Daniel and Ellyn O'Brion; 11 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and close friends. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Parish, 268 Brown Street, Westbrook, on June 4th, 2024, at 11:00am. Burial to follow at St. Hyacinth's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make donations to the American Heart Association. The family would like to thank the nurses on the 4th floor and ICU @ Mercy for their care, of mom and those who were able to be with her.
