Gorham Hazel Meserve, 94, died Friday, February 17, 2017, at the Gorham House. She was born August 13, 1922, the daughter of Henry and Doris (Katon) Emery. Hazel grew up in Buxton and attended the one-room school house at Dearborn Hill. She graduated two years early from Buxton High School in 1938. Hazel went on to attend the University of Southern Maine and enjoyed a 22-year career at Unum where she retired as the supervisor of insurance adjusters. Hazel loved traveling with her husband Les, with whom she wintered in Lehigh Acres, Florida for 18 years. She was a 16-year resident of the Gorham House where she was very entrenched in the community, working with activities and scholarship committees and helping to organize the Itsy-Bitsy Store. Hazel will be remembered as a generous woman who was a mother to everyone. She had a passion for taking care of others, raising several foster children, and looking after fellow residents and staff at the Gorham House. In addition to her parents Hazel was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years Leslie "Les" Meserve; siblings, Robert Emery, and Mildred Ramsey. She is survived by her son Kenneth White and his wife Annette of New Gloucester; special niece Claudia Treadwell and her husband Gerry of Buxton; brothers, Louis Emery and his wife Lucille of Buxton, and Bruce Emery of Buxton; grandchildren, Kimberly White and Kristen Woerner and her husband Will; great grandchildren, Eric and Elleanor Woerner, Thomas Welch III, and Jayson and Dominic Milyaro; several nieces and nephews; her adopted family, Poth, Ta, Sambath, and Vichica, and her special family at the Gorham House. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 Noon, on Friday, February 24 at the Gorham Chapel of Dolby Funeral Chapels, 76 State Street Gorham. An hour of visitation will be held prior to the service. Interment will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress Street, Portland. Following interment a reception will be held at the Gorham House.
