Obituary

Portland- Hazel Caroline Newman, 88, died peacefully on March 11, 2014. She was born on November 2, 1925 in Lubec, Maine, the daughter of Harry and Elsie (Carter) Brown. She grew up and attended school on Campobello Island, NB. She had 13 siblings. As a teen she moved to Lubec to live with her sister Mae and help care for her niece, Helena. At the age of 18 she married Carroll M. Newman. They had one son, Leland, and eventually settled in the Greater Portland area although they moved often. Hazel and Carroll raised their son and she worked as his secretary as he established his masonry business which continues today. For over 60 years she was the voice that customers heard at the other end of the phone. As a family they enjoyed boating, camping and frequent trips downeast. When Carroll died suddenly in 1983 Hazel moved in with her son Leland, his wife, Delores, and her grandchildren, Laurie and Jim. Known simply as "Gram" to Laurie, Jim and all their friends who entered their Scarborough home Hazel was loved by all who met her. She was the kindest, most even-tempered woman you could hope to meet. After Carroll's death she found companionship in her sister Mae. Together they attended South Gorham Baptist Church each Sunday, visited their husbands' graves in Lubec often and ate at nearly every restaurant in between! Hazel was also "Gram" to six great grandchildren- Taylor, Sam, Jake, Noah, Grace and Cole who all loved her very much. She spent a lot of time with each of them whether it was at her house or packing a bag and going to them. Hazel is survived by her son Leland, her daughter-in-law Delores, both of Scarborough, her granddaughter Laurie Manley, husband Jason and their three children Sam, Jake and Grace and her grandson Jim, wife Kimberly and their three children Taylor, Noah and Cole all of Windham. She is also survived by two sisters Marie Murphy and Florence Miller and many nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service will be held in the spring at Olson Cemetery in Lubec, Maine.
