Obituary

WESTBROOK-- Harold A. "John" McFarland passed away peacefully, February 20, 2018, after a brief illness. John was born in Westbrook, June 10, 1921, the son of Arthur and Alice McFarland. He had 7 sisters, all but one older than him and all who predeceased him. He graduated from Westbrook High School and went to work as a machinist before enlisting in the Army Air Corps serving domestically from 1943-46, during which he was trained at The Ohio State University & University of Cincinnati as a bomber pilot for the invasion of Japan. While on leave during World War II, John married Priscilla Currier on June 5, 1944. She predeceased him in 2006, after 62 years of marriage. Before and after his discharge, John had many opportunities to apply his trade as a machinist, but he returned to Westbrook, Maine with his beloved Priscilla to live and work close to family. After his discharge, John built a home next to Priscilla's parents, on the site of the former Cumberland and Oxford Canal and a few short years later moved a block away to the corner of West Valentine and West Pleasant, across the street from his mother. He and Priscilla lived there until 1998, when they moved to Gorham. Recently, John moved from Gorham, back to Westbrook's Stroudwater Lodge to be closer to family. John belonged to the Westbrook American Legion. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying many years of camping, fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling. John liked to keep busy. He was always doing a project around the house, as well as helping family members with their projects. His favorite times with family were spent this way. His daughter, Gaye Lapomarda, and her husband Pasquale of Portland predecease him. He is survived by his son, Terry McFarland and his wife Carol of Westbrook; his grandchildren, Pasquale III and his wife Shawn-Elise, Julie and her husband Matt, Sara, Kristy and her husband John, and Kevin; and his great-grandchildren, Pasquale IV, Maddalena, Anthony, and David. His many nieces, nephews, and cousins also mourn his loss. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at 11 a.m., at the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee, 35 Church Street, Westbrook. Internment at St. Hyacinth Cemetery in Westbrook will follow in the spring. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in John's memory to: The American Legion, National Emergency Fund, Stephen W.
