Obituary

Scarborough- H. Lorraine Gordon Fernandez Williams, age 89, of Gorham and Alexander, Maine, died peacefully on September 12, 2018 surrounded by her family. Born on June 23, 1929 in Boston, Massachusetts, Lorraine was the daughter of Ethlynne and Ronald Gordon, and was later adopted by her step-father William Fernandez. Lorraine grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts and attended area schools, graduating from the Beaver Country Day School. In 1948, Lorraine married Stanwood R. Williams, a neighbor, and they later became proud parents of two daughters. The family moved to Gorham in 1962, living at 79 Johnson Road for 56 years. Lorraine is a 1969 Art Education graduate of the University of Southern Maine and held teaching positions at the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf and Cape Elizabeth Schools for over 20 years. During her retirement, Lorraine continued her passion for art education by providing art lessons privately and in several Maine schools. Lorraine was a talented portrait artist who would frequently gift bereaved families with a portrait of their loved one after their passing. Her paintings and murals hang at Dartmouth's medical school, in the halls of the Barron Center, and in galleries from Kennebunk to Eastport. She was a member of Maine Women in the Arts, the Alpha Delta Kappa teaching sorority, and the National Art Education Association. Lorraine was an avid traveler, taking many trips throughout the US and abroad with her family. She was an incredible correspondent, memoirist, and poet – self-publishing an illustrated book of her writings. She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Stanwood R. Williams She is survived by her daughters Cheryl Clark and Lauryl Williams, son-in-laws Robert Clark Jr. and Frank Hazelwood, brother William Nelson Fernandez and his wife Rita, brother-in-law Charles R. Williams, grandchildren Erin, Janelle, Greg and Aaron, and great-grandchildren James, Anna, and Joshua; many nieces and nephews A service of remembrance, followed by a fellowship reception, will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at First Parish Church of Gorham, 1 Church Street. Services are under the care of the Gorham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lorraine's memory to First Parish Church of Gorham, 1 Church St. Gorham ME 04038, or to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, 11 Hunnewell Rd. Scarborough ME 04074.
