Obituary

Guy Whittier Melcher, Jr, 90, of Bridge St., Westbrook, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014 at his home with his family by his side. Born in Jay, the son of Guy and Moselle (Cook) Melcher, Sr, he was predeceased by his parents, bother, Stuart, sister, Maxine Breton and grandson, Daniel Kelly.  Guy is survived by his wife, Arlene Tracy Melcher of Westbrook; daughters and their spouses, Gloria (Paul) Coffin of Portland and Leslie (Dana) Kelly of Westbrook; grandchildren and their spouses, Guy Coffin, Tracy Coffin (Matt) Adams, Ted (Vicki) Coffin, Afton Kelly (Nick) Morton, Stuart (Lizzy) Kelly, Kaila, Deanna, Jessalynn and Sam Kelly, ten great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He graduated from Wilton Academy and Bryant College in RI.  He was a four time recipient of the Purple Heart while in the US Army during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star for valor.  Employed as a civil engineer for over fifty years, Guy was Honorary Director on the Board of the Maine Chapter of the American Public Works Association.  He served as a Registered Maine Guide, was a founding member of the Sha-Goie-Watha Sportsman's Club and lifetime member of First Baptist Church, Portland, serving on the Trustee Board and leading the Explorer Scout troop.  Guy's passions included hunting, snowmobiling  and climbing Mount Katahdin which he accomplished nine times. His life so well lived enriched all those with whom he came in contact. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."   Visiting hours will be held from 6 to 8 PM Monday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.  A graveside service with military honors will take place at 2 PM Tuesday at Riverside Cemetery in Farmington.  On-line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.
