Obituary

Gregory B. Helms Sr., 64   Gorham-Gregory B. Helms Sr, 64, of Gorham Maine passed away peacefully at home with family, Thursday, May 7, 2015.  He was born April 21, 1951 in Biddeford, Maine to the late James Asa Helms and the late Romayne (Ronnie) Edwards Helms Miller. He spent most of his younger years between Portland and Highland Lake with family and friends.  Greg graduated from Deering High School in 1969.   After High School he served in the military and traveled to Germany.  After serving several years overseas he finally came home to settle in Limington, Maine with his family. Greg went to work for Portland Rubber Company, where he was an installation technician. This allowed him to travel.  Greg moved on to work at SD Warren Paper Company until the mill consolidated.  At that time he became a foreman for The Roofa, until health issues caused him to retire. As a jack of all trades and a lover of cooking, Greg spent the last seven years cooking and being the heart  of his family.  He enjoyed having his family around and playing with his children and grandchildren.   Greg pursued a life dedicated to those he cared about with a ferocious loyalty. His incredible ability to make friends and keep them as part of his family is what he will be best remembered for.  He was truly dedicated to taking care of those that came into his heart. Greg always measured the worth of a person by what they held in their hearts.   Greg is survived by his loving wife Bernice (Wilson) Helms and five children Gregory Helms Jr and wife Elizabeth of Waynesboro, Virginia; Tayib Helms and wife Lisa of Westbrook; Johnna (Bittner) Wallace and husband Paul Wallace II of Westbrook; Jesse Helms and wife Nicole of Yarmouth, and Patrick Bittner of Gorham.  He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; his brothers Mark Helms and wife Lori of Ashville, North Carolina, James Helms of Abeliene, Texas;  and several nieces and nephews.   Visiting hours will be Monday, May 11, from 5 to 7 PM at the Blais and Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook, Maine.  A celebration of his life will be on Tuesday, May 12, at 2:00 PM  at the Funeral Home.  On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.
