Obituary

God accepted a very special angel on June 28, 2013 when he received Ginger Crawford Hatt.  Ginger was born on January 5, 1937 in Houlton, Maine.  She was the daughter of Leland and Beulah Crawford.   She moved to Portland at age 5.  She attended Portland High School and was a very proud graduate of the Class of 1954.  She enjoyed planning and attending her class reunions and prided herself on maintaining her friendships with classmates.   Ginger married the love of her life, Arthur Hatt, on June 16, 1956.  They recently celebrated 57 wonderful years of marriage together.  If there ever was a love story, it was theirs.  They were always together and enjoyed a beautiful life.  They had two children, David and Sandra, who were the lights of their lives.  They were then blessed with four grandchildren and their lives focused on them as well.  â€œGram" could always be counted on to support each grandchild in whatever activity they were involved in and never missed an event.  She held a special bond with each grandchild.   Ginger was diagnosed with Lymphoma on June 28, 2007.   How ironic that exactly six years to the day, we would lose her.  She bravely fought her cancer and was accompanied and cared for by Arthur the entire time.  Carrying out her wishes, she remained at home and passed away surrounded by her family.  They maintained a vigil and helped her on her journey.  Ginger was not afraid to die, as she stated recently.  One of those reasons was that she knew her grandson, Kyle, who passed away in December of 2008, would be waiting for Grammie with open arms.  She couldn't wait to see him and all those who had passed before her.  Her brother, Lawrence, predeceased her in 1995 as well. Ginger retired from UNUM in 1995 and was an active part of the retiree luncheons held regularly.  She made friends easily and won them over quickly with her smile, her warmth, her love and her outgoing personality.  Once you met Ginger, you knew you had made a friend for life.  She loved openly and was never afraid to tell you "love ya".  She had so many wonderful friends who helped carry her through this battle.  She spoke many times of how lucky she was to be loved by so many. Trying to put Ginger's life into a few paragraphs doesn't seem fair.  She had so many adventures and experiences in her life.  She enjoyed life and all it offered.  She was happiest surrounded by her family and friends.  She endeared herself to all who met her and prided on being "Grammie" to so many.   She gave of herself freely, not only with love, but with kindness and compassion.   She will be sadly missed by her constant companion in life and love, Arthur.  A piece of his heart is gone. Ginger is survived by her loving, devoted husband, Arthur.  Her son, David and wife Linda, of Windham.  Her daughter Sandie Rogers and partner Perry Schlanger, of Windham.  Her sparkling joys, granddaughter Bryanna and friend Joe Reagan, grandsons Christopher and Stephen, all of Windham.  Grandson Kyle's girlfriend, Lindsay Webber, became an important part of our lives and became the "surrogate" stand-in for Kyle in important family situations.  Lindsay was also there with Gram when she made her journey, joining Kyle with open arms.  Ginger is also survived by brothers William Crawford and his wife Jennie from Buxton, Terry Crawford and his wife Judy of Clermont, FL, Beverly Roberts and her husband Richard of Kissimmee, FL and Leland "Buddy" Crawford, Jr. of Norway.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as numerous friends. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 8 PM Monday at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.  A funeral service will be held at 10 Am Tuesday at the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church. Interment will follow in Mayberry Cemetery, Windham.  On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com. In keeping with Ginger's generous heart, she has requested that donations be made either to: Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals P. O. Box 10 South Windham, ME 04062 Or online at www.msspa.org.   Or VNA - Home Health Hospice 50 Foden Road South Portland, ME 04106 Be certain to signify that they are made in Ginger's memory. Ginger's light will shine on in everyone's hearts.  She touched so many and will be sadly missed.  She left a legacy that people can only hope to achieve in their lives.  If she had a chance, she would tell you that it's never goodbye.  It's always "see ya, love ya".
