WINDHAM - Gertrude Elva (Cooper) Gavin, 96, of Windham passed away at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on Sunday, October 7, 2018. She was born in Falmouth on August 21, 1922 to John and Annie Cooper. She was married to John Gavin on April 4, 1944. Trudy graduated from Deering High School in 1940. She was exceptionally good with numbers and worked for several banks over the years keeping meticulous records before the computer era. She was also an extremely hard worker no matter what she did. Her most cherished role was that of "Grammy". Trudy loved sewing, quilting and could never pass up the opportunity to browse a fabric store. She also loved books and learning new things. Trudy cared deeply about her country and was a vocal supporter of equal rights and environmental protection. She always wanted to help people. In the early days of the Windham Lions Club, she was active in community projects along side of her husband, John. She and John were married for 73 years and she was a very supportive partner. They were able to travel extensively around the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom. She especially loved visiting Disney World. Over the years, Trudy and John lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Walpole, Massachusetts, and Stamford, Connecticut. In 1960, they returned to Maine settling in Windham where they built their own home with the help of her brother, Leon Cooper. Gertrude is predeceased by her husband John in 2017, son J. Thomas, and siblings Dorothy Crandall, Leon (Bud) Cooper, Helen Pride, Evelyn Dudley, and Ralph Cooper. She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Cassidy and her husband Scott; granddaughter, Becky Cassidy and her partner Alexander Jordan; grandson, Liam Cassidy and her brother, John Cooper all of Windham as well as several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Gigi Flanigan, and Beth Adams for their loving care and compassion over the last three months. Also heartfelt thanks to Sherry from VNA for her kindness and care. A private burial will take place at a later date. Donations can be made in Gertrude's name to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Wounded Warriors.
