GORHAM - Geraldine Ann (Thompson) Day, 84, received her “divine promotion” in the loving presence of her family on Jan. 24, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. “Gerry” lived by the motto, “Life is good. choose happiness!,” which she embodied to the end.
Gerry was born at home on May 31, 1941 to Virginia and Lawrence Thompson in Cornish, Maine. A member of Cornish High School's class of '59, Gerry loved school and everything it offered. She was yearbook editor, class president, head cheerleader, worked in the principal’s office, and participated in basketball, softball, chorus, and band. On a teenage blind date to watch the movie “Love Me Tender,” Gerry found the love of her life. Not Elvis, but Thomas L. Day! They married on August 20, 1959, and settled in Gorham. They had one son, Todd, whom they adored.
A young finance professional, Gerry was told women weren't allowed to be managers. She resigned in protest, and went to Gorham State Teachers College/University of Southern Maine (and brought her husband along). She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees (and 40 hours plus) in Education. She taught Elementary School in Portland and Westbrook as well as English at Morse High School. Gerry then became a Guidance Counselor and worked at Portland High School for two years and was transferred to Deering High School until retirement in 2005. Gerry was Guidance Department Head, organized Sr. Last Assembly, and on the Substance Abuse Team, and also served as interim Assistant Principal. She received the coveted Russell Award for her excellence in teaching. With her care, she kept countless students on track.
Gerry had boundless energy and her hobbies included talking on the phone(s), swimming in her heated pool, reading, going to the movies, and traveling with family and friends. She loved cruises and her many explorations of Europe. Her favorite destination was Disney World, to which she went almost yearly since the park opened! This continued when she became a doting “Nana” to two granddaughters, Kiara and Taylor, who were her princesses. She took special interest in their lives and schooling, and loved bringing them on shopping sprees. She was thrilled when Kiara found her own “TOMMY!” (“FRANKIE!”) and enjoyed living with them over the past few years as well as having her sweet Taylor near.
Gerry was a selfless and community-minded woman. She was a Trustee at Baxter Memorial Library and the Baxter Museum, President of the Gorham Medical Loan Closet, President, Vice President, and Secretary for Lakes Region Senior Center, on the board of Cressey Road Christian Church, a registrar for Gorham voting, a member of the Female Samaritans, a member of the TRIAD, and a Corporator for Gorham Savings Bank.
She was predeceased by her husband Tom; She leaves behind her cherished son, Todd Day, of St. Augustine, Florida and her beautiful granddaughters, Kiara Day-Lyon and Taylor Day of Gorham; special grandson-in-law Frank Day-Lyon; beloved former daughter-in-law Laura Day; beloved brother Larry Thompson and wife Claire; “sister” Laurel Smith all of Gorham; numerous nieces and nephews as well as two goddaughters, Diane and Karen, and MANY friends.
The family would like to thank the “angels” who helped Gerry throughout her battle, especially the dear friends who brought her to treatments.
Visiting hours will be on Friday, Jan. 30 from 4-6 p.m. A memorial service will be on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1:00 p.m. Both will be held at the Cressey Road Christian Church, 81 Cressey Rd, Gorham.
