Gorham- George L. Watson, 95, passed away on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. The son of Perley and Louise (Lombard) Watson, George was born in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of three his family moved back to Maine and settled in Kennebunk. He attended Kennebunk schools and graduated from Kennebunk High School. He met his future wife Arlene Hutchins in high school and they were married in 1943. George followed in his father's footsteps and went into the printing trade. When WWII broke out he was drafted by the United States Army and served in Europe until the end of the war. Upon his return from service, he again was employed as a Linotype operator for the Kennebec Journal. George finally moved to Portland where he worked for 16 years for the Casco Printing Company. As a supervisor in Casco Print's check printing department, George was offered and accepted a bank manager's position at the Canal National Bank Branch in Gorham and worked in that capacity until 1985. He moved his family to Gorham in 1965, building a home on Cressey Road in Gorham. George remained a Gorham resident for the remainder of his life. He was a member of the Lions Club and enjoyed serving the Gorham Historical Society for years after his retirement. He was predeceased by his wife, Arlene, of over 60 years and by his sister Pricilla of South Carolina. He is survived by his sons Jon, and his wife Cindy of Virginia, and Steve and his wife Sheri of Colorado, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. George's family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff and his friends of the Gorham House for the excellent care they provided to him and his family. A celebration of life service will be scheduled later in the spring. Interment will take place at Hope Cemetery in Kennebunk.
