Obituary

George Franklin Verrill, 91 years old, of Windham, Maine 12/31/2024 After a short illness, our Dad went to be with Mom, Jeanene Farmer Verrill, who joined the angels herself in May this year. They were married 66 years and lived in their home in the Brookhaven neighborhood of Windham since 1963. He leaves behind their children, Terri, Mark, Susan, Gary, David, Cory and their spouses; 11 grandchildren, Michelle, Daniel, Thomas, David, Courtney, Brandi, Brianna, Austin, Olivia, Lillian, Addison and their spouses; and 10 great-grandchildren Gavin, Avery, Cameron, Travis, Colby, Georgia, Grant, Emery, Everly, and Wesley. There are nieces and nephews far and wide, too many to list. He also leaves behind 2 sisters, Susan and Myrtle and 1 brother Mert. He was pre-deceased by sister Beverly and brother Harold. He served in the US Army Corps of Engineers from 1953 to 1956. He was stationed at Fort Belvoir in Virginia, Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, and Yokohama, Japan. Dad had a passion for being with people and always had time for any child. When they went out walking in the neighborhood, kids would line up and he would become the "human swing" treating anyone who wanted a "rumpy-dump" ride. Summer days were spent at Ditch Brook, and he taught many how to swim. In the winter, he built an ice-skating rink in the backyard and a mountain of snow in the front yard and all the neighborhood was welcome. He was an avid fan of the Celtics and Red Sox. He was an active member of the North Windham Union Church, and a Troop Leader of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts for many years. He was also involved in several youth groups over the years. He enjoyed woodworking. He worked at LC Andrew Lumber in South Windham for 26 years, Maine Cement Products, Hall Implement, Gerrity Lumber Company, Wickes, and then retired from Brosco. He had an extensive workshop in his basement and was always making unique and useful items for all our homes and for his grandchildren. We will miss him dearly and he is at peace now. Visiting hours will be at Dolby Blais & Segee, 434 River Road, South Windham, beginning at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. Service also at Dolby Blais & Segee begins at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Mayberry Cemetery in Windham in the Spring with a gathering following. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Barbara Bush Children's Hospital in Portland as several grands and greats have spent time there and the staff is amazing.
