Gary K. Davis, 81 formerly of Gorham, passed away March 20, 2026 after a long illness.
He was born November 28, 1944 in Portland, ME the son of the late Gordon K. and Dorothy (Leavitt) Davis.
Gary grew up in Kezar Falls, and graduated from Fryeburg Academy, class of 1963. After graduation, he attended the University of Maine at Orono, majoring in Chemistry, class of 1968. It was there that he met Carol Lynn. They were married in 1967 a year before their graduation.
Gary and Carol Lynn moved to Gorham, raising their two sons, Chris and Chad. Gary worked as a Research Chemist at the S. D. Warren (SAPPI) Research Lab in Westbrook until his retirement in 2001.
Gary had a love for the outdoors and travel. He enjoyed the water, especially the ocean and had a brief love affair with sailing, starting with a small Sunfish, trading that in for a larger sailboat to tour Casco Bay, then downsizing to a windsurfer until ultimately trading that out for an ocean kayak, touring and camping on many of Maine’s coastal islands.
He was an instrumental member as well as former president of the Casco Bay Bicycle Club helping to grow their membership. He organized several popular 100 mile “Century” rides held annually. The first was a “Lighthouse Ride” along the coast of Southern Maine with stops at the many lighthouses in the area. The second was a “Fall Foliage” ride along the Kancamagus Highway to see the fall colors. He was proud that these rides were recognized in Bicycle Magazine in their “Best of” edition.
Gary took his bicycling enthusiasm globally, taking his family on a bike tour of Western Europe (1988), and a tour of newly opened Russia with the Casco Bay Bicycle Club in 1994. Gary completed multiple “Century Rides” in various states, bicycled the “Going to the Sun Road”, and several guided trips throughout the United States.
Gary’s zest for the outdoors and travel included climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro with Chris and hiking the Swiss Alps with Chad. Throughout his many travels, he carried his camera, documenting all the wonderful sights and people. On his return he diligently prepared fantastic slide shows for all to see.
Later in life Gary met Mary (Jacobsen). They married in 2009 and he moved to Falmouth. Much of their time was spent with their two Golden Retrievers, Harper and Trevor. He rediscovered his enjoyment of photography and made many drives along the backroads and coast of New England, photographing covered bridges, barns, lighthouses, Adirondack chairs, and other unique items.
Gary and Mary were avid travelers, visiting Alaska, Peru, The Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Italy, France, Cuba as well as enjoying many Caribbean cruises.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Carol Ann Stone. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Mary (Jacobsen) Davis, are his sons, Chris Davis and his wife, Julie of Grafton, MA and Chad Davis of Mechanicsburg, PA and his first wife, Carol Lynn of Chebeague Island. Gary is also survived by his two brothers Peter and wife Rhonda of Porter, ME and Scott and life partner Robin, Mesa, AZ. Gary was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Andrew, Cole, Zoe, Gareth, Georgia, and Quinn as well as an uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Gary will be remembered for his sense of humor, love of the outdoors, and being a frequent and engaged spectator at the many sporting events and activities that his sons and grandchildren participated in.
The family would like to thank Affinity Care of Maine for their unwavering support and care over the last several months.
