Obituary

Frederick Allen Small Jr., 89 of Portland, also known as Smalley, Umpie, Gramps, Grandpa,  Papa, and the Candy Man, passed away Monday, January 19th in his home, surrounded by his family. A special thank you to VNA Home Health Hospice for making it possible.     Frederick was born in Portland on November 14, 1925,  the son of Frederick Sr. and Carrie Small. While attending Westbook High School, Frederick entered into the Navy and served on a wooden hull, subchaser,  which survived a typhoon and World War II in the Pacific Theatre. After his service in the Navy, he worked at S.D Warren Paper Company as a paper coater, and machine operator for over 40 years. In addition to his surviving WWII, Frederick fought an equally challenging battle against alcoholism and won, remaining sober for 26 years. He was a member of many organizations and clubs. He was a Mason, a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W, and was also a founding member of Christchurch. He was the Grand Marshall in the 2010 Memorial Day Parade in Portland, Maine. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, doting on his grandchildren, and loved attending their sporting events. He was a Red Sox fan and enjoyed watching their games, as well as traveling, and gardening. Frederick was predeceased by his parents, a brother Shirley Small, his sister Virginia Swisko, and a grandchild Gregory Hinds. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his daughter Dorothea "Dorrie" of Westbrook, step daughter Cathy Lemar of Portland, stepsons Ralph "Bubba" Foster of Portland and John Foster of Portland, as well as 10 grandchildren, Brett Norton and wife Nicole, Cori Lynn Cormier and husband Gary, Jenna Quattrucci and husband Raymond, Erica Gammon, Melissa Coates and husband Dave, Jamie Armstrong, Joshua Hinds and wife Jessica, Matthew Foster and wife Stacy, Timothy Foster, and Alexia Foster, as well as 17 great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, from 6-8 pm at Blais and Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St, Westbrook. A Funeral service will be held at Christchurch, 1900 Congress Street in Portland on Friday at 12 pm, interment will follow directly after the service at Woodlawn Cemetery on Stroudwater Street in Westbrook.
