PORTLAND—Eugene A. Gumaer, 87, of Portland, died peacefully on January 21, 2017 at the Barron Center in Portland. He was born March 21, 1929, a son of Byrdie and Hazel (Rought) Gumaer. He grew up in Endicott, New York and enrolled in the United States Army while he was still in high school. Gene earned his GED while in the service and made a career as an electrician in the Army. While overseas in Germany, he met his wife, Elisabeth Danne, they married and together they moved back to the United States and traveled the country while he was in the military and raised their family. In 1968, he retired from the Army as a Sargent First Class and moved to Westbrook. Gene, also known to his family as "Opa" or "Disco" continued his career as an electrician, working for Maine Medical Center for 23 years. In his younger years, Gene enjoyed fishing, bowling, and talking to people on the CB radio. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who were his pride and joy. He is survived by his children, Eugene Gumaer and his wife, Laurie, Evelyn Pike and her husband, Vincent, Ellen Fogg and her husband Randy, and Erik Gumaer and his significant other, Angie; siblings, Wendell Gumaer and Beverly Brigham; grandchildren, Vincent Jr. and his significant other, Meredith, Christopher and his wife, Kerri, Jeremey and his significant other Kelly, Timothy and his wife Emily, Curtis, Colby, EJ, Gene, and Sam; 11 great grandchildren; and a special brother in law and best friend, Duane Cummings. Gene was predeceased by his wife, Elisabeth on January 26, 2011. He was also predeceased by 10 siblings, and a granddaughter, Sarah Rose. The family would like to thank the staff at the Barron Center for the love and care they gave to our father. A period of visitation will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 8:30 am to 9:30 am at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, ME 04062. A funeral service will begin at 9:30 and burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park in Portland.
