Obituary

Elmer E. Larson Sr.85, of County Rd., Westbrook, passed away peacefully at his home with his loving family by his side Wednesday, April 19, 2017. He was born in Portland the son of John and Mildred Larson. He became interested in playing the guitar at age 12 and played with several bands and numerous radio and television stations. In 1988 Elmer was inducted into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame. His love of music continued throughout his lifetime and he unselfishly helped many young musicians get their start. He started his own band "Country Fever" which received numerous awards. Besides music, Elmer also had a love of cars, especially antique cars. He received many trophies for his 1930 Model A Roadster which he took great joy in. He owned and operated Larson's Garage and Auto Salvage. He also co-owned the Dancemore Hall in West Baldwin that ran successful dances in the 60's. Elmer and his wife Joanne enjoyed camping and for years he was active at the Beaver Brook Campground and Wassampski Springs in Westbrook. They also wintered in Florida for many year, where he continued playing music and entertaining. Elmer will be remembered for his friendly personality, he was a people person and made many friends over the years. He was predeceased by a son John Larson Sr, a grandson Steven Roberts Jr, and a son-in-law David Norton. He survived by his wife of almost 66 years, Joanne Shapleigh Larson of Westbrook; a son Elmer Larson Jr (Elaine) of Westbrook,; daughters Judy Roberts (Steve) of Gorham, Jane Whitcomb (Randy) of Gorham, Jeanie Corbbrey (Joe) of Okmulgee, OK; a sister June McLeod (Norman) of Portland; grandchildren Kim Paulin(Barry), Tracy Rosales (Jared), John Larson Jr (Jennifer), Julie Kurlin (David) Andrew Whitcomb (Lea) Cassandra Larson (John) Taylor Whitcomb (Walter) Jessica Larson, and Samantha Larson; and 12 great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7 PM Tuesday, April 25, at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. A funeral service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday at St. Ansgar Church, Woodfords St., Portland. Interment will be private. On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.
