Westbrook Elizabeth "Betty" Young, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on the morning of November 13, 2023. She was born in Yarmouth on June 5, 1935 to Lloyd and Leigh (Wood) Farwell. She graduated from Westbrook High School with the class of 1954. On June 29, 1963 Betty married Walter Young, also of Westbrook. Betty and Walter started their married life in Gorham, and then moved to a newly built cape on Puritan Drive in Westbrook. There, they raised three daughters, Sally, Jean, and Mary Ellen. Betty was a stay-at-home mom to her kids while they were young. She then went to work at Forest Street School in Westbrook as the "Lunch Lady!" After that she found that banking suited her talents so she went to work at Fleet Bank on Main Street in Westbrook. Betty was a tireless volunteer. All of the girls were member of the band so it was natural that she became a member of the Westbrook High School Marching Band Boosters. There she helped raise money for the band members to travel to many places for competition and exhibition. Since Walter was a volunteer firefighter, Betty became a member of the Westbrook Women's Fire Auxiliary. After the girls were grown and in school, Betty became a volunteer with the VNA supporting flu clinics, for the City of Westbrook as an election poll worker, treasurer of the Westbrook/Scarborough Senior Citizens, treasurer of the Westbrook Women's Club and a life member of the Cornerstone Order of Easter Star 193. Betty was a lifelong member of the Westbrook Warren Congregational Church. There her volunteerism continued. Betty served the church as a trustee, member of the diaconate, church choir, Sunday school teacher, and the Women's Fellowship (yeah, probably treasurer). Betty was an integral participant in the church holiday fairs and Saturday Bean Suppers that were held at the church as well as the Thursday meals provided by the church for those in need. One passion Betty had was coordinating and working on funeral receptions held at the church. She made a difference at a time when people needed one less thing to worry about. Betty also spent countless hours knitting hats and caps for the American Cancer Society for children battling cancer. Betty's greatest joy was her grand daughters Nicole, Samantha, and Abbey. All three are very accomplished athletes and Betty could often be seen in the crowd cheering them on while knitting a cap for a child in need. Betty was predeceased by, her husband, Walter; daughter, Mary Ellen Black; parents Lloyd and Leigh; sister, Nancy Snow; and brother Peter Farwell. Betty leaves behind her daughters, Sally and Philip Steinhagen of South Portland, and Jean and Donald Libby of New Gloucester. Betty also leaves behind beloved granddaughters Nicole Steinhagen of Waterboro, Samantha Libby of Austin, TX, and Abbey Steinhagen of South Portland. Betty also leaves behind her sister Patricia and husband Bill of Texas, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty's family would like to provide our heartfelt thanks to all the staff at the Gorham House for the incredible care and support provided for Betty In the years she resided there. During the final days of Betty's life it was very heartwarming to see the near constant line of Gorham House employees stopping by on their own time to provide well wishes and support for Betty.
