Obituary

Elizabeth L. Dow Barton was born June 21, 1930 in Portland, Maine to Leslie and Velma Dow. She passed away April 7, 2017 in Texas with her daughter April by her side. She graduated from Malden High School, Class of 1947, Westbrook College, Portland, Maine, Class of 1949 and Northeastern University, Class of 1953. Upon earning her Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics she was employed by Raytheon Corporation for several years. After her marriage in 1954, she became a fulltime homemaker though she frequently used her gift as a vocalist to help support her family. She was a member of the Boston Opera Company under the direction of Sarah Caldwell and the Armenian Choral Society under the direction of Fr. Manassian. In addition, she sang for the Waltham Musical Club, The Cambridge Opera Company and several congregations in the Boston area. She also worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts caring for mentally handicapped adults. In 2002 Bob and Libby decided to forego working and the cold New England winters and moved to Boerne, Texas to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Retirement was not mundane for Libby. After Bob passed away in 2003 she spent her remaining years traveling with her daughters and granddaughters. Her travels included cruises to Alaska and Bermuda and trips to the Grand Canyon and Hawaii, attending her high school reunions and being a delegate to the 2004 Republican convention in New York City. In 2015 she and April became proud members of the George W. Kendall Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She had a great love for her family and especially enjoyed her great granddaughters. She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Ann Barton of Malden Massachusetts and April Lee Lopez (Mike) of Boerne, Texas. In addition, she leaves behind nine grandchildren, Gary Lewellyn (Kerri), James Lewellyn (Laney), Anna Lewellyn, Steven Lewellyn, Elizabeth Slauter (Johnathan), Katherine Scarpitta (Andrew), Victoria Sprang (Caleb), Santiago Lopez and Angela Lopez and two great-grandchildren, Morgan Lewellyn and Mia Rocca. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of forty-nine years, Robert Blake Barton and her son Bernard Burns Barton. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 6 at 6pm at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, ME 04062. Interment will be private at the Dow's Corner Cemetery, just outside of Standish, Maine.
