Gorham - Eleanor Dorothy (Rowett) MacKenzie, 95, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on June 6, 2017. She was adored as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, neighbor, and resident at Gorham House. All who knew her loved her and were made to feel like family. "Ellie" was born on September 12, 1921, in North Adams, Massachusetts, to Henry M. Rowett and Hilda (Hassett) Rowett. She was the second of nine children with whom she remained extremely close, sharing vacations, frequent visits, phone calls, and numerous cards to mark important events. She grew up in Southbridge, Massachusetts, where she graduated from Mary E. Wells High School and later met the love of her life, John S. MacKenzie. They were married on September 27, 1941 and enjoyed 48 years of a wonderfully happy marriage before "Mac" passed away in January of 1990. Their daughter Carolyn was born while Mac was serving in the United States Army in WWII. Meanwhile Ellie volunteered as a Red Cross Nurse's aid in Southbridge. Upon his return, they moved to Gorham, Maine, where Mac resumed his career in retail management at McLellan's in Westbrook, Maine. They developed many close friendships and loved entertaining at their cottage on Sebago Lake. Ellie was excellent with numbers, and this led her to a career beginning as a teller at Westbrook Trust Company. After 14 years in Gorham, Mac and Ellie relocated several times with Mac's career, and Ellie continued working in banks, eventually becoming Vice President of Union Savings Bank while living in Mamaroneck, New York. The two retired and returned to Gorham in 1983 to be closer to their daughter and grandchildren. They enjoyed attending numerous school and athletic activities and many family events and celebrations. Ellie's greatest source of happiness was her large and extended family. Nana was her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's biggest cheerleader and supporter and was much loved by all of them. Ellie took great pride in creating a beautiful and welcoming home. She loved to entertain guests and especially enjoyed attending special family reunions and events with her large extended family. She was famous for sending special cards to all of her many family members, nieces, nephews, and friends. Also important to Ellie was her Catholic faith. She and Mac were active members of St. Anne's Church in Gorham. Ellie spent her last three years at the Gorham House, where she was lovingly cared for by the wonderful staff and the caring professionals of Compassus Hospice. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation for the love, support, and devotion shared while she was in their care. Ellie was predeceased by her loving husband, Mac and five of her siblings, Henry Rowett Jr., Ruth Hansen, Norma Horne, Patricia Parent, and William Rowett. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn MacKenzie Bowers, three grandchildren, Jeff Bowers and his wife Luci, Dan Bowers and his wife Lisa, and Kim (Bowers) Carlisle and her husband Chris. She is also survived by five great grandchildren: Carter, Emily, MacKenzie, Ian, and Manny. Additionally, she is survived by three sisters, Christine Parent, Marilyn Gleason, and Nancy (husband Charles) Fontaine, two sisters-in-law, Grace Rowett and Pauline Rowett, many special extended family members, and dear friends Karen and Jim Carlson. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, June 11 from 4-6pm at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, June 12th at 11:00 at Saint Anne's Church, 299 Main St., Gorham. Burial will follow at Eastern Cemetery, Gorham.
