Obituary

STANDISH—Edwin C. Ahearn, 68, died on June 22, 2017 at the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough. He was born September 27, 1948, a son of Edwin J. and Katherine (Briggs) Ahearn. He grew up in Portland, graduating from Deering High School in the class of 1967. Ed then went on to join the United States Army where he proudly served his country for two years. During his tour in Vietnam, Ed was wounded by a landmine and exposure to Agent Orange, causing lifelong complications. He was a decorated veteran, a recipient of four Bronze Stars, the Silver Star, Medal of Valor and the Purple Heart. Upon his return to the United States, Ed began his career working for the City of Portland, and on May 26, 1972 married Towanna Jo Wilson. Together they settled in Windham where they raised their daughter, Alana Ahearn. He was employed with the City of Portland for 37 years until his retirement in 2007. Ed always put his family first. He enjoyed family gatherings and especially spending time with his grandchildren. Ed was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating. A positive attitude and a big heart empowered Ed to be a man of great character, strength, and will. Ed will be remembered as a hero, long before receiving the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife, Towanna Ahearn of Standish; a daughter, Alana Russell and her husband Dennis of Gray and their children, Kaitlyn, Kiley and Brayden; siblings, Linda Turner and her husband Don of Rome, Brian Ahearn and his companion Carolanne Peterson of Gardiner, and Sueann Quirion and her husband Frank of Augusta; a niece, Melissa Turner, and nephew Derick Turner, and many other cousins, nieces, and nephews. Ed spent many happy summers with his grandparents Mable and Aussie Wight of Mt. Vernon. He was predeceased by his parents, a nephew Shawn Turner, and his beloved dog, Howie. The family would like to thank the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough for their love and care. Ed has gone fishing. A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 from 3pm to 4pm at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham, ME 04082 with a memorial service beginning at 4pm.
