Obituary

Falmouth- Edward A. McLean, 83, of Falmouth passed away March 24, 2019 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. He was born June 2, 1935, in Portsmouth, NH, to Edward Frederick and Mary Jane (Trudeau) McLean. He and his family grew up on the Piscataqua River where they enjoyed water skiing and boating. He graduated from R.W. Traip Academy in Kittery, ME, and soon entered the US Air Force. He was stationed in Alaska in several locations including Circle Hot Springs and was assigned as a radar operator. He was then transferred to Kansas CIty, Missouri (Whiteman AFB). After discharge he began working for IBM as computer technician, repairing anything from key punch machines and washing-machine-sized 100MB hard drives through the more modern systems at the time of his retirement. It was during his time with IBM that he met the woman who would become his wife, Kathleen Taylor. They were married on July 20, 1963. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was an active member of the Sports Car Club of America and ran various cars (Morris Minor, Bugeye Sprite, MG-TF, Austin Healey Sprite) in time trials and hill climbs. With the birth of his son, he gave up the hobby until 1986 when his son was 18 and they both got involved racing RX-7s until 1991 when his son entered the Air Force. He was known by many to being able to make his underpowered cars outperform much more powerful and higher tech cars. Some even questioned whether he had a manual transmission because of his smoothness and never missing a shift. Throughout his life, he had a fascination with flying model aircraft. Beginning with simple control line aircraft, he progressed to radio-controlled aircraft including sail planes and highly detailed World War II scale models. In the mid-1970s, he purchased what would be his first German Shepherd. From there, he began raising German Shepherd pups and became heavily involved in obedience training and competitions. Eventually, his notoriety as an expert trainer got him approached to become an obedience judge and to begin teaching obedience classes. With his last German Shepherd, he began to work on Search and Rescue training. In the late 1990s, after the passing of his last German Shepherd, he transitioned to Welsh Corgis which he called "short German Shepherds". Soon after buying his first Corgi, he began to adopt abused dogs through the local Corgi Rescue. After his retirement from IBM, he began to work part-time at the Kennel Shop in North Windham doing anything from caring for the animals that were for sale, to dog food sales, to training classes. He is also survived by his wife Kathleen, his son, Edward T. McLean, his sister Veronica Poirier, several nieces, cousins, and other members of his extended family. His immediate family would like to thank everyone who has provided support including Ed's friends, extended family members, and former co-workers. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Mayflower Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club Rescue Program, MPWCC c/o Lisa Burns, 24 Sandy Neck Road, East Sandwich, MA 02537-1208. A visitation will take place on Friday, March 29, 2019 from 6pm to 8pm at the Windham Chapel of Dolby Blais & Segee, 434 River Road, Windham, ME 04062. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in his honor on Saturday, March 30 at 11 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, ME 04062 with a reception to immediately follow.
