Edward F. McDonough, Jr, 82, of Westbrook passed away on June 12, 2023. He was born on February 19, 1941 in Portland, the son of Edward F. McDonough, Sr and Catherine Marie (Wiley) McDonough. After Edward graduated Cheverus High School he went on to get an associate's degree at Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (currently Southern Maine Community College. In 1961 he enlisted in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1966. In the middle of his military career Edward married his high school sweetheart, Mildred "Millie" McDonough, in 1963. The two of them went on to have two children. Edward worked at the Portland Terminal Company where he worked his way up to General Yard Master. As a child, Edward had started collecting coins which later turned into a hobby he was passionate about throughout his life. He also perused many social activities and was a lifetime member of the Portland Club, President of MNA, a member of ANA, he obtained a certification for foreign and American coin grading. In 1991 a family-owned business was opened at the family's residence in a converted barn on Route 1 in Saco. Eddie also served two terms as councilor for the City of Saco as a persistent fiscal conservative. He loved deep sea fishing with his friends and a member of the Cunner Club, one of the oldest chartered clubs in the country, which was originally a sports fishing men's club. Now they only meet once a year at a clubhouse in Cape Elizabeth. Edward was a member of the IHC and BPOE Elks where he enjoyed playing cards. After retiring to sunny Georgia, he again was active in local Bene factorial clubs and small local theater involving live productions. Eddie and Millie enjoyed traveling to many southern states as well as foreign countries, especially Ireland in their retirement years. In 2020, due to his progressing illness, the family decided to return home to Westbrook where they resided until Eddie needed long term care. Edward is survived by his wife, Millie, of Brunswick, sister; Carol Connolly, of Portland; children, Kimberly and Edward III, granddaughter; Molly Champagne and husband Shawn, great grandsons; Charlie and Connor Champagne of Westbrook, Liam McAteer of Cape Elizabeth; , and many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he is predeceased by his grandchildren, Theresa McDonough and Buddy McDonough. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023 at 10:00am at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland, ME. With a burial to follow at New Calvary Cemetery. Edward's family would like to thank the staff at Springbrook Center for the loving care and kindness shown to him during his two and a half year stay.
