Obituary

Edward P. Guitard, 87, formerly of Westbrook, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.   He was born in Westbrook, the son of Ellen and James Guitard.   He graduated from Westbrook High School and Diesel Engineering School in Chicago.  Edward served in the US Navy during World War II with the Navy Beach Jumpers and participated in the invasion of Southern France. Edward worked many years at C.J. Merrill, Metal Fabricators.  After retirement he bought what was known as the Boathouse at 40 Lincoln St.  He began building his own docks and even his own boats, which he would rent for cruising the river.  It wasn't long before the Boathouse became a center of activity for many Westbrook residents, including family gatherings and wedding receptions. His love for the Boathouse never waned in his retirement; he built a new building with an apartment but continued to spend his days in the Boathouse, enjoying the many visitors who came.  This is where he will be remembered by many. He is survived by a brother Robert Guitard of Portland; a sister Mary Cashner of Gorham; and many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Thursday, Dec. 27, at St. Anthony's Church, Brown St., Westbrook.  Interment will be in St. Hyacinth Cemetery. The Family would like to thank all the people at the Veteran's Home who took great care of him. On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.
