GORHAM — Edward Carignan died at home, and is now with our Lord, on Thursday, May 31, 2012, after an eight month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Portland on June 7, 1948, to Lester Carignan and Joyce Bowden. He went to South Portland schools, and starting at the age of 15, worked a series of jobs, including a fondly remembered time at Herman Shoe. He began a successful carpentry business, and was well known for his amazing ability to not only build imposing homes with detailed stonework, but design furniture and well loved toys for his children. After many years he was able to pursue his lifelong dream of farming. He raised Angus beef cattle, and horses, and always had a barnyard full of various farm animals. Ed loved his machines, and spent many wonderful sunny days on his tractor cutting hay. He loved to travel, dine-out, and look for a great deal in Uncle Henry's. He spent the last four years serving Christ at Westbrook Baptist Church, who he considered to be his family. He was best known as a hard worker, provider, and a man of many talents. He is survived by his wife Heidi; his mother Joyce; sons Edward Jr., Ted, Christopher and Thomas; brothers Roy Sr., Roger and Lester, and his sister Jennifer. Ed was blessed with 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Edward had many wonderful friends who sacrificed much as they walked alongside him in his illness. Viewing will be held on Sunday, June 3, from 3-5 p.m., at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook. A funeral will be held on Monday, June 4, at 10 a.m., at Blais & Hay, followed by a burial at North Gorham Cemetery at 1 p.m. On line condolences may be expressed at www.blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.
