Obituary

GORHAM – Edith Harriet McCauley, 87, of Gorham passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Country Village in Casco. She was born in Richville on September 10, 1931, daughter of Charles and Hattie Searles McCauley, one of five daughters. She grew up in Gorham and was a graduate of Gorham High School, Westbrook Junior College, Saint Joseph's College and from the University of Southern Maine where she received a masters degree in library science. Her first work was as an English teacher in Limington, Gorham, Fryeburg Academy and at Biddeford High School. Also she worked as a social worker at Pineland placing and supervising clients in work situations. The longest part of her career was spent at Portland Public Library, working first at the original library on upper Congress Street and later, along with Louise Hall, she established and ran the Portland Room in the current library at Monument Square. She was an expert on Portland history and belonged to many groups in the greater Portland area. Two of her favorite projects were working on preserving Evergreen Cemetery and working with the Gorham Land Trust. She was predeceased by her parents, her sisters and brothers in law, Mildred and Norwood Dunlap, Edna and Roger Gagnon, Madeline and John Hayden, and Elsie Graffam and by her nephew Arden Hayden. She is survived by her brother in law Elmer Graffam of Westbrook, nieces and nephews Patricia Herrick and husband Manuel Garcia of North Berwick, Susan Hayden of Sudbury, Vt, Christine Dileo of Westbrook, Brenda Gherardi and husband George of Gorham, Heidi Ray and husband Carroll of New Gloucester, Thomas Hayden of Standish, Loretta Burbank and husband Daniel of North Berwick, and 17 great and 35 great great nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 1:00pm at the White Rock Free Baptist Church, 300 Sebago Lake Road, Gorham, Maine 04038. The family would like to thank the staff at Country Village in Casco for their loving care.
