Windham- Duane Heffron, 85, died peacefully at his home in Windham, surrounded by his family, on June 29, 2017. Duane was born on August 25, 1931, in Burns Flat, Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948 until his Honorable Discharge in 1952, most notably serving in Korea during this time. His favorite memories are his early years working at his dad's ice cream shop and his world travels as a young adult. After seeing the world, exploring such places as Saudi Arabia, Israel, Greece, Turkey, Jerusalem, and Dubai, Duane married his wife Cecilia Pribil, in Enid, Oklahoma, on January 11, 1970. He always remembered this day fondly because it "had snowflakes as big as dinner plates," and "so very much ice on the church steps," thus marking the beginning of their lifelong companionship full of love, laughter, and fun. His family and friends remember Duane as a devoted, wise, and caring husband, father, and brother, living to help others and make people laugh. He spent his career as a computer programmer, working on everything from giant mainframes to PC's, and most recently his iPhone. Yes, he was a texter! Duane loved to garden and do yardwork, he loved anything yellow, and all things lemon. His insatiable thirst for learning new things and his gentle wisdom will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew him. Duane was predeceased by his parents, Major Dennis and Areah Louise (Fox) Heffron. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cecilia Heffron; his son Thomas Heffron of Rogers, Arkansas, his daughter Mary Phipps of Windham; grandchildren Daniel Heffron, Matthew Heffron, Katie Smith, and Noah Heffron (children of Thomas and Lisa Heffron), Anna Phipps and Sophie Phipps (children of Robert and Mary Phipps); and his sister Mary Eva Woodward and her husband Roger of Park Hill, Oklahoma. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Duane's extraordinary life. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Mayberry Cemetery in Windham. Donations may be made in Duane's memory to the Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals, PO Box 10, South Windham ME 04082.
