Obituary

Gorham, Maine --- George B. Lawson M.D., 89, formerly of Philadelphia, PA, Nahant, MA and Camden, Maine, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2017, at home surrounded by family (and his cat Sassy). Born in Allentown, PA on October 12, 1928, he was the son of George Benedict and Margaret (Holstein) Lawson of Lewisburg, PA. George spent his youth in Lewisburg and was a 1945 graduate of Mount Hermon School, next Bucknell University in 49 where he met his future wife, the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1955 and finally the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute. George married Georgia Anne Hutchinson of Boonton, NJ in 1954. They remained married until her death in 1997. His career was full, including work at Philadelphia General Hospital, Butler Hospital in Providence, McClean Hospital in Belmont, MA, Mid Coast Mental Health Center, a private practice for over thirty years, Medical Director and Chairman of Psychiatry St. Luke's Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan, Medical Director Kingwood Hospital in Michigan City, Indiana, Associate Medical Director Jackson Brook Institute in South Portland, Maine , Vice President and Medical Director of GreenSpring of New England. He had teaching appointments at Tufts University Medical School, Boston Psychoanalytic Institute, Elizabeth Zetzel Psychotherapy Study Center of Harvard University and Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia, PA. In addition to a full work life and being an unreformed "do it yourselfer" he also loved the water. He spent every available minute boating as well as building a forty six foot long ocean racing sloop of his own design while still finding time to serve twice as Commodore of the Camden Yacht Club. By this time he had become known to all as "Doc" Lawson. In 2000, after navigating the intercoastal waterway from Baltimore to Florida he married Delores W. Hoffman of Philadelpia, PA. He spent most of his remaining years in Philadelphia, a city that he loved. George was predeceased by his first wife (the mother of his children) Georgia Hutchinson Lawson, and his second wife, Delores Hoffman Lawson. Surviving are his three children, Capt. George B. Lawson and his wife Polly (Bell) Lawson of Gorham, Maine; Susan Lawson Smales and her husband Daniel R. Smales of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Kenneth S. Lawson, MD and his wife Laura (Whitson) Lawson of Duxbury, MA; and grand children Nathaniel, Ian and Thomas Lawson of Gorham, Maine, Madison, Perry and Brie Lawson of Duxbury, MA. A celebration of his life will be held at the Camden Yacht Club on June 10th, 2018. The family requests that in lieu of flowers gifts be made to the Camden Area Youth Sailing Program (CAYSP) Scholarship fund, P.O. Box 204, Camden, ME 04843.
