Obituary

Dorothy L. Wellman, 98.5, left this world on June 4, 2013 at Mercy Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Westbrook on November 5, 1914, she was the only child of Henry Dickinson Leighton and Mildred "Phoebe" Hulit Leighton. She graduated from Westbrook High School and Westbrook Junior College, Class of 1936.  She was a medical secretary for a local doctor and retired from Central Office at S.D. Warren . She enjoyed her 3700 hours of volunteering at the Westbrook Community Hospital (now Mercy Westbrook). A member of the Westbrook Universalist Church, she was active in the Townsend Club.  She was also a member of the Westbrook Women's Club. She loved completing her daily Cryptoquip, Jumble, and Crossword puzzles; they were a big part of her morning routine.  She loved a good game of Bridge, Cribbage, and Scrabble.  Enjoying traveling, she visited Canada, Alaska, Bermuda, and the Caribbean.  She especially enjoyed Hawaii and other states in the United Sates.  She collected penguins and referred to her home as "Penguin Manor". Married to David P. Wellman on April 19, 1941, they enjoyed 37 years of bliss.  Mr. Wellman passed away on September 11, 1978. She is survived by her son David H. Wellman and his wife Karen of Westbrook.  She passed her sense of humor and love of a good joke to her grandsons; Dean D. Wellman and wife Becki, Glen K. Wellman, and Neal V. Wellman.  She also enjoyed her great grandsons, Hayden W. Wellman and Cameron D. Wellman. A special thank you to Joel Sabean, M.D. and David Legro, M.D. for their professionalism and caring natures.  The fourth floor nurses – Karen, Morgan, Kate, Kara, Tom, Saunna, Mackenzie, and Christina were a comfort to her in her final days.  Thank you to David and Lisa Drouin who were special friends. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, June 10, at 11:00 Am with Rev. Robert Sallies officiating at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St., Westbrook.  Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
