Dorothy Alzina (Wight) Abbott, RN retired - Gorham
Dottie Abbott passed away May 31st at Avita of Stroudwater surrounded by her family.
She was born in Portland, ME on November 8, 1945, the daughter of the late Clarence and Alzina (Green) Wight. She was the 13th child of 18 and often said that 13 was actually a lucky number.
She attended Gorham Schools and graduated from GHS in 1964. She attended Mercy School of Nursing and was in the graduating class of 1967.
On April 26, 1968, she married the love her life, and favorite dancing partner, Robert Abbott, and they made their home in Gorham with their two daughters, Christine and Cynthia.
She found great comfort in being near the family farm and surrounded by her siblings. Whether enjoying a cup of coffee, helping prepare holiday meals, or simply spending time together, the farm was always home. She was endlessly giving—always ready to lend a hand—and was the trusted “nurse on call” for any family illness or question.
She dedicated more than 42 years to her career as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital, where she was deeply respected and loved by both colleagues and patients. She took immense pride in her work and the care she provided.
She enjoyed traveling with Bob and their daughters, with lifelong friends, and later with her grandchildren. Some of her greatest joy came from time spent with her grandchildren—watching them on her days off, hosting sleepovers, and singing them to sleep with favorites like Old Dan Tucker and Darling Clementine. On special occasions, they were even serenaded with I Got You Babe.
Her happiest memories were made with family and friends—gathered by the pool, at the family camp, and at the farm. Traditions such as annual trips to Benson’s Animal Farm, Saturdays at Fryeburg Fair, Fourth of July at the camp, and Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve at the farm became cherished moments that will be remembered by all who shared them.
She is survived by her loving daughters and son-in-law, Chris and Bill Butler, and Cindy Abbott; her cherished grandchildren, Sydney Butler, Kyley and Sulli Butler, Jordyn and Aaron Titcomb, and Keltan Tanguay. She is also survived by her devoted youngest sister and her husband, Kathleen and Pete Sawyer; her caring sister-in-law, Audrey Flood; her sister, Judy; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was predeceased by her parents and her siblings: Florence, Louise, Elinor, Hazel, Janice, Joan, Ann, Grace, Pauline, Norman, Linda, Sharon, Dianne, James, and Jane.
We would like to give special thanks to the hands-on care givers of the Autumn neighborhood at Avita, who took the best care of our mom – especially Donna, Bonnie, and Alex.
A graveside service will be held at 1PM on June 10, 2026, at Sapling Hill Cemetery, 222 Sebago Lake Road Gorham, ME followed by a gathering of family and friends at the White Rock Community Clubhouse 34 Wilson Road, Gorham, ME
