WINDHAM—Doris Eilene Cairns Staples, 91, died peacefully at home with her family by her side on August 16, 2017. Daughter of Milton and Ida Shaw, Doris was born on January 8, 1926. Doris worked at the S.D. Warren paper mill for 13 years, where she met her husband Fred Staples. The two were married on April 15, 1966. In addition to raising her children, Doris spent many hard working hours on the family farm. She could always be found either driving around in her Gator tractor, raking hay out in the field, or simply being followed around the farm by a one of her many goats, which she loved sincerely. Doris was full of spirit and always managed to make everyone laugh. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making home cooked meals for her whole family - nobody could ever quite make mac and cheese the way she could. Doris also enjoyed gardening and canning the abundance of produce she grew every year. One of her favorite times of the year was the Christmas season; she loved making wreaths and kissing balls at her and her husband's Christmas tree farm. Doris had been in the business of selling Christmas trees for over 50 years. Above all, Doris was the loving matriarch of her family, and cared for all of her children and grandchildren dearly. Doris is survived by her husband, Fred Staples of Windham; children, James Cairns and his wife Susan of Windham, Carole Pierce and her husband Jeffrey of Windham, Nancy Fredette and her husband Roland of Windham, and Vaughn Staples and his wife Donna of Colorado; 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her siblings, Irvin Shaw and his wife Helen, Donald Shaw, and Shirley Irish and her husband Lester; and a grandchild, Brenda Cairns. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Home Instead Senior Care and VNA Home Health Hospice for their compassionate care of Doris. A funeral service will be held at 3pm on Monday, August 21, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd., Windham, ME 04062, where a period of visitation will be held from 2pm until the time of service. Burial will follow at Mayberry Cemetery on the Park Rd. in Windham.
