Don Johnson of Westbrook died on March 30, 2015, nine months to the day after learning he had cancer. Don was born on October 18, 1942 to Henry Raymond and Thelma Cote Johnson. He, his five brothers and one sister were raised in Limington by his mother and his dad, Arthur Herrick. He was reunited with his father and family when Don was a young father himself. Family and work were Don's life. He met his "soulmate" at a movie theater in Kezar Falls when he was 16 years old. He and Sheila were married more than 52 years ago. They were blessed with two children and six grandchildren. Work and family were Don's life. As is common in Maine, he worked from a very young age. Whether working on the farm, the dairy, as a master plumber, mechanical contractor, teacher or mentor, Don took pride in work. He owned Peerless Welding for many years and most recently ran Phoenix Welding with his son (and Janice Thurston). Don typically worked 7 days a week. Therefore, besides reading and learning, he wasn't a man with toys or hobbies. Philanthropy was another passion of his. Being a Mason was only one of the ways he incorporated that into his life. He was predeceased by his mother, his father, his dad, his brothers Raymond Johnson, Kevin Herrick and Bruce Herrick and his sister Jacquie Johnson Jacober. He is survived by his wife Sheila Watson Johnson, son Eric Johnson, daughter and son-in-law Dawn and Hal Leighton, six grandchildren Zachary and McKenzie Johnson, Cassidy, Brock, Vance and Mallory Leighton, his sister Sheila Hubbard, brothers Craig Herrick, Mike Herrick, and sister Judy Johnson. At the family's request, instead of flowers, please consider an act of kindness in memory of Don. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1PM on Saturday, April 11th at the Marriott at Sable Oaks, 200 Sable Oaks Drive, South Portland. A reception will immediately follow at the same location.
