SOUTH PORTLAND – Dawn Fowler Munson Pacillo died Sunday, January 7, 2018. She was born March 1, 1940 in Portland, the daughter of Donald L. Fowler and Katherine Norton Fowler. She graduated from South Portland High School in 1958, and following graduation she worked at various companies including Maine Bonding & Casualty Company, WGAN TV and Federal Loan and Building Association. In 1963, she married Charles Munson of Portland and they had two sons, Dean and Charles. For the next fifteen years, she was an at-home mom, raising her two boys. In 1979, she took a full-time position with Barker Steel Company, from which she retired in 2001. She and Charles were divorced in 1980. She married Matthew Pacillo of South Portland in 1996. Dawn had many interests. She loved all forms of nature, reading and writing poetry, arts and crafts, sewing, knitting, and tending to her flower gardens. She was an early member of the Art in the Park committee and of The Friends of the South Portland Public Library. For years, she and Matthew spent nearly every Friday and Saturday night at the Bridgeway Restaurant where on Fridays, Dawn could sing with Bobby Laine and friends and on Saturdays they absorbed their weekly quota of great jazz with Don Doane's band, visiting musicians and vocalists, and where Matt could sit in on the drums whenever invited. She would like all of those long-time friends to know that in her heart she knows "We'll Meet Again" some sunny day. Since childhood Dawn's favorite spot in the summer, and in later years, her sons as well, has been at Colcord Pond in Porter, ME. In 1998, she and Matthew discovered another favorite spot where the two of them could go for one to three months a year to escape Maine's winter cold. For 29 years, they've been vacationing in Lower Bay on the Island of Bequia in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Bequians are now like family, and the visitors to the island who, like them, return every year from Canada, the U.S. and Europe have extended their circle of dear and close friends far and wide. Dawn was pre-deceased by her parents and her younger sister, Lynn Fowler Benhart. She is survived by her husband Matthew; her son Dean Munson and his wife Alicia of Cape Elizabeth; her son Charles "Bud" Munson of Windham; her step-children Maria (Donald) Symonds of Mt. Holly, NJ, Elenita (Theo) Pozzy of Portland, OR and Edith Pacillo of Boise, ID. She is also survived by her very special grandchildren, Cody and Samantha Munson of South Portland and her very dear and far too distant step-grandchildren Rachel and Olivia Pozzy of Portland, OR and Charles and Henry Smith of Boise, ID; her brother John Fowler and his wife Linda of Corinna; her step-sisters, Sherrilee Baker of Winterport and Jo McLellan of Roanoke, VA as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. The support she received from her children and grandchildren, family, friends, neighbors, loving caregivers at the New England Cancer specialists at the Scarborough campus over the last year and the other angels at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House was overwhelming. The family can't thank them all enough. A celebration of Dawn's life will be held at 2:00PM Saturday January 27, at the Maine Military Museum, 50 Peary Terrace, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dawn's name to the Maine Military Museum, 50 Peary Terrace, South Portland, Maine 04106.
