Obituary

David J. Pluff, businessman and avid outdoorsman, passed away peacefully on January 30, 2022 following a period of declining health. He was 92 years old. Dave was born in Portland on August 21, 1929 to Wilfred and Louise Royer. He grew up in Portland and Scarborough and served in the Merchant Marine Service during World War II. Dave and Rena Gwinn married after the war, starting their life together in an apartment on State Street in Portland. They soon moved to Windham where Dave learned appliance repair and eventually started his own business under the name Atlantic Appliance. He built an extensive clientele, earning a reputation of caring, expertise and reliability. Dave loved the outdoors and hunted and fished all his life. Among his most cherished memories were the annual deer hunting trips to the Allagash with his closest hunting buddies, staying for days in an abandoned, drafty lumber camp. Dave and Rena did not have children; however, both were fond of, and often entertained and supported, the children of their close friends. Later in life, Dave would become a member of the Lake Region Shrine Club, supporting child burn victims and those with orthopedic needs. He joined the Shriners motorcycle corps, performing in parades and other celebrations. Rena passed away in 1990. Later, Dave would become the close companion of Barbara Moulton, who earlier had lost her husband. Together they would pursue a mutual passion for the outdoors through snowmobiling, camping and traveling. They became active members of the Road Runners, a local RV and motor home group. Dave was instrumental in planning their camping journeys all over southern and eastern Maine. Both the Shriners and Road Runners remember still another of Dave's many passions: his cooking. Most complimentary comments were directed toward his yeast rolls and chowders. Friends say what they'll miss most was Dave's sense of humor. He was known for subtle, slightly sarcastic comments that would sear a person's vulnerability in a good-natured way. Once, he invited friends to his house for in-the-ground baked beans; when they arrived, he apologized and said his beans had failed and they'd have to settle for the canned variety. He then proceeded to serve his delectable "from-the-ground" beans…and waited for the reaction. Dave is survived by two sisters: Ida of Nevada and Mary of South Portland. No services are planned. Dave is buried next to his beloved Rena at Brooklawn Cemetery. And remembered by many. Donations in Dave's memory can be made to the Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston.
