Obituary

David Joseph Breunig, 21, of Westbrook, passed away after an accidental drowning, he was found Friday, April 22, 2016. David was born in Portland, on November 2, 1994, the son of David and Elaina (Latini) Breunig.  He passed away on February 26, 2016.  He was raised in Westbrook and graduated from Westbrook High School in 2013. He was currently a junior at the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. DJ, as he was known to all who knew him, was a caring, fun loving, loyal and admired young man.  His friends would describe him as the guy everyone looked up to and the guy who made the room smile.  His family would describe him as a young man with his act together who was on track to a fantastic life.  Those meeting him for the first time would describe him as polite and respectful.  DJ would describe himself as " too handsome".  DJ was a good student with many friends.  He played football, basketball and baseball at Westbrook High School, and one year of basketball at Maine Maritime.  He majored in Marine Engineering Technology (MET) at MMA and was on the Dean's List. He often talked about the future and all the wonderful opportunities his career would offer him.  After paying his college debt he talked about buying real-estate and having his dad manage his properties while DJ shipped out.  As we come to terms with the loss of our beloved son we know that he left a piece of himself in all that he touched and that heaven has just received a humble and kind angel like no other.  David is survived by his parents David and Elaina Breunig of Westbrook; his brother Derek Breunig and sister Danielle Breunig, both of Westbrook; his paternal grandparents Joseph Breunig and his companion Jane Nason of North Port FL, and Judith Von Thelen of Portland; his maternal grandparents Mary McNally and husband Norman of Windham, and Philip and wife Mary Latini of Estero, FL; his aunts and uncles Joe and Joyce Breunig, Jim Breunig,   John and Rena Breunig, Ann and Michael Linahan, Michele Latini, Philip and Kate Latini, Philip and Kate Getchell, Nicole and Brent Walker, and Neal and Kelly Latini; as well as many cousins. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 8 PM Friday, April 29, at the Westbrook High School auditorium. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM Saturday, April 30, at St. Hyacinth Church (St. Anthony's Parish), 268 Brown St., Westbrook. On line condolences may be expressed at blaisandhayfuneralhome.com.           In lieu of flowers donations can be made to DJ's memory to the Athletic Department at either Westbrook High School, 125 Stroudwater St. Westbrook, ME 04092 or Maine Maritime Academy, 1 Pleasant Street, Castine, ME 04421.
