Obituary

Daniel Edward Smith Kornegay II, 84, of Brunswick, Maine, passed away on April 12, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born on January 13, 1942, and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland, Dan lived a full and adventurous life defined by his family, the outdoors, his love of sports (first playing, then later watching), and love of storytelling with his dry wit.

Dan is survived by his wife, Mary Kornegay; his children, Daniel E.S. Kornegay III and his wife Claire, and Diane Thrasher and her husband Matt; his grandchildren, Lorelai Thrasher and Tina Michaud Gonzales and her husband Thovie; and step-great-grandchildren, Marie and Margaux. He also leaves behind his beloved little Boykin dog, Annie.

He is also survived by his siblings, Marte Toohill, Sally Kornegay, and Marilyn McElwee, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents, Daniel (Ed) Kornegay and Ruby (Strowd) Kornegay.

Dan worked for over 40 years at New England Telephone (NYNEX) before retiring. He was a manager for many years and actively involved in the Rotary Club. Then he began a second career with L.L.Bean, where he worked for 11 years in the Hunting and Fishing departments, sharing his expertise and passion with others. Over the years, he also led fly-tying classes, taught fly casting, gave fly fishing demonstrations to the general public at the L.L. Bean store pond and was a Boy Scout leader, inspiring countless outdoor enthusiasts.

A Master Maine Guide, Dan’s lifelong passion for hunting and fishing took him across the backroads of Maine and throughout 48 states. He had an uncanny sense of direction remembering everywhere he had previously been. He will also be remembered for his knowledge of fishing spots and how to catch ‘em. He loved telling a good fish story (maybe a stretch of the truth, but it really happened).

Funeral services will be held on June 13, 2026, at Dolby, Blais & Segee Funeral Home in Windham, Maine (visitation 10am; service 11am) with burial to follow at Mayberry Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Dan’s memory to CHANS Home Health & Hospice.
