Conrad A. LeConte passed away peacefully on June 25th at the Hospice/Palliative Care Facility in Togus, after a brief illness with his daughter and her husband at his side. He was born in 1921 in Westbrook and was the eldest son of 10 children born to Eugene and Hazel (Landry) LeConte of Westbrook. He graduated from Westbrook High School in 1939. After graduating, he joined the Army National Guard and entered the Federal Service on Sept. 16, 1939. He was stationed at Fort McKinley and Fort Williams. In 1943 he transferred to Aberdeen, MD, and in Aug. of 1943 was sent to Louisiana for training in the US Army. In October 1943 transferred to Camp Shanks, NJ. He was then deployed to Europe for active duty where he landed in Liverpool, England. He told the story of D day, and having to sleep over night on Omaha Beach without any coverage, as it was too dark to advance to a proper camp. He would never forget the feeling of a very long night being bombed by the Germans. Conrad was awarded campaign Stars for Normandy, No. France, Eastern Europe, Rhineland, A Victory Medal (WW II), and an Army of Occupation Medal. He also received a Certificate from the French Government expressing their country's thanks, as well. He, after his military career, was discharged in October of 1945, returning to Fort Dix, NJ. He then enrolled as a PG student at Bridgton Academy. This is where he met his wife of 44 years, Priscilla Burns. After graduating in 1946, he and Priscilla were married in Westbrook. Their first home was a camp on Highland Lake, where they lived through that winter. Conrad then went to work for Beneficial Finance Co., where he worked for 5 years. In 1948 they moved to Saco St. in Westbrook. For a short three year period, they resided with Priscilla's parents at their home in Buxton. In 1962 he and Priscilla built their home on Louise Street, where Conrad resided until his death. In 1949 Conrad went to work for S.D. Warren Paper Mill, where he worked running the Calendar machine and later on become a Supervisor. He retired after a career that lasted over 31 years. Conrad was a beloved husband, Father, Grandfather and great Grandfather, who lived a simple yet fulfilling life that included hard work, weekly church services, where he was a lifetime member at St. Mary's and later St. Hyacinths' Church and his lifelong love of gambling and going to the "Track" to watch the sulkies race. He also enjoyed fishing , and the "famous" family Clambakes that originated with his father, he enjoyed wintering in Florida with Priscilla in his early retirement years. He enjoyed also many hours with friends at the American Legion which, he was a longtime member. His other love was dancing. Even up until his wife Priscilla died, they loved to dance at weddings, and other celebrations. He later enjoyed this same activity with Margaret Robie, his loving companion of 17 years. They also enjoyed dancing nearly every weekend at Vallee's Steak House with several other wonderful friends for over 8 years until that restaurant finally closed its doors. Conrad will be remembered by many friends and sadly missed by his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Hazel (Landry), his wife Priscilla (Burns), his brothers, Norman, Norris, Russell, Eugene, his sister, Christine LeConte, and his companion Margaret Robie, his nephew, Brian LeConte, and his niece Laurie, (Hawkes). He is survived by his son, Christopher LeConte and wife Sharon (Frye) of Calais, his daughter, Stephanie Russell and husband, Norman of Buxton, his grandchildren, Kimberly Russell of Philadelphia, Jennifer Hallock of NY, Andrew Russell of San Diego, Matthew LeConte of Windham, and Derek LeConte of Calais, his great grandchildren, Kylie Wyscochil and Logan Hallock of NY., also surviving are his brothers, Robert of CT, Norwood of Fla., Paul of Westbrook, and his sister, Carleen Simpson of Saco and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Richard LeMay, Dr. Tim Richardson, Dr. James Schneid, and the compassionate nurses and staff at the Hospice/Palliative Care Facility in Togus and all the kind and caring people he met at Gentiva. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Tuesday, July 2nd from 3 - 5 p.m. with a funeral/Mass following visitation hours at Blais & Hay Funeral Home, 35 Church St. Westbrook. Conrad will be buried with Military Honors on July 3rd at 2:00 P.M.at the Maine Veteran's Cemetery in Augusta alongside his wife, Priscilla, who died in 1991.
