Obituary

Windham - Clayton Stanley Verrill, 89, born March 24, 1929, passed away on July 9, 2018. An outstanding father, loyal husband, hard worker, strong soldier, sweet and caring grandfather, exemplary example and mentor to many. Clayton was an Army veteran who spent a good portion of his service in Seoul Korea, working on construction of the runway at Kimpo Air Force Base, an airfield that played a major role during the Korean War. He was a skilled carpenter, electrician, plumber and all-around handyman. He was also an accomplished pilot who enjoyed the freedom and perspective from above this beautiful earth. He most loved flying small private planes as a member of the Bald Eagles Flying Club and the Civil Air Patrol. He also followed the NASA space program from its inception, where in the early days, he would track the path of each orbit by attaching map tape to a globe. He is survived by his wife and beloved partner of 68 years, Joan, with whom he shared many joys, passions and adventures, such as designing and building several homes, traveling extensively around the country by plane, automobile or RV, experiencing many natural, cultural, historical, artistic and family events. From National Parks, Broadway theater productions to Presidential inaugurations and NASA rocket launches, their broad interests took them from coast to coast multiple times. They would often decide to go at the spur of the moment, for example, a last-minute decision to drive to Washington in order to attend the funeral of John F. Kennedy, requiring them to drive all night. On another trip, the family, hooked up their camper and traveled to Florida to see the very first rocket launch destined for the moon. Clayton and Joan also served as mentors and youth leaders at the First Baptist Church in Westbrook where they planned a number of activities from mountain climbs to musical productions. During the 80s and 90s they created a business called Cookieman, where you may have enjoyed a chocolate chip cookie perfected by Clayton at either the Fryeburg Fair or any number of other country fairs throughout New England. Clayton always said his family was his greatest joy and he will be missed more than words can convey by his children: Julie, Stephen, Gary, his wife Signe, and his grandchildren: Ashley, Rusty, Rachel and Olivia. The world was simply a better place with Clayton in it. What better legacy could there be than that? There will be no services at this time. Arrangements are under the care of the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee.
