Charlotte Richardson Butters, 98, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2026.

Charlotte was born and raised in Wakefield, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Dr. Ira W. Richardson and late Manola Tufts Richardson.

She attended public schools, graduating from Wakefield High School, followed by a postgraduate year at Oak Grove Seminary and later Freshman year at Colby College. In 1948, Charlotte married the late Sterling L. Butters and relocated to Maine. They had two daughters, Ellen Ricahrdson Preston and Deborah McLean Butters, both of Windham, Maine.

She was a woman of her generation, concentrating on Family, Faith and Community. She loved to garden and canned the vegetables she grew. She baked, knit, quilted, embroidered, and made clothes for the girls. Tea Parties were a favorite activity. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader, a Sunday School teacher, member of the Women’s Guild and sang in the choir.

Charlotte was a stay-at-home mom and later had a variety of jobs. She was a lunch lady in the Portland Public School system to have the same vacation schedules as the girls. She was a dental assistant then office manager, the receptionist at a local law firm, and finally the Secretary at her church, North Deering Congregational Church. She engaged in several charitable organizations including volunteering at Project Feed food pantry and The Good Samaritans for crisis relief and aid.

She was predeceased by her parents, husband, and two older sisters Martha Dulong and Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Brown.

She is survived by her daughters, her grandsons Michael Preston and Paul Preston, her great-grandchildren Reese Preston, Julia Preston Glaude, Jaren Preston, Samuel Preston, Dean Preston and Strider Preston, and her two great-great grandchildren.

Maybe you were a neighbor who she brought cookies to, or a Senior she went grocery shopping for weekly when you couldn’t, or your path crossed with her without ever knowing in her varied activities behind the scenes. Her legacy of kindness and generous spirit is passed on to her future generations.

Visiting hours will be held Friday October 2, 2026 at Dolby, Blais & Segee’s Windham Chapel located at 434 River Rd. Windham, Maine starting at 10:00 am until 11:00 am with a Funeral Service to follow at 11:00 am followed immediately by burial at Brooklawn Cemetery in Portland, Maine.
