PORTLAND—Cathleen Georgina (Libby) Small, 78, of Portland died peacefully at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House surrounded by her family on Friday, February 3. She was born November 16, 1938, the oldest daughter of Clifton and Margaret (Cummings) Libby. Cathleen grew up in the greater Portland area and graduated from Deering High School. She married Donald C. Small in 1958, and together they raised three daughters, Jeraldine, Linda, and Diane. Outside the home, she worked as a care giver, personal assistant, and as an office administrator at a number of local companies. Cathleen found joy in observing nature. She took pleasure in watching birds and was most relaxed with an open book in her hand. Her favorite pastimes included traveling to camp in northern Maine with her husband and sitting by Long Lake in Harrison. A lifelong learner, Cathleen was an avid reader who was always hungry for spiritual growth, self discovery, and political knowledge. She had a warm hearted and insightful perspective. She listened carefully, always seeking personal connection, and selflessly offering her guidance, energy, and wisdom. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Donald C. Small, daughters Jeraldine Peddle, Linda Richard and her husband Steven, and Diane Small; sisters Jacqueline Libby Dexter and her husband, Ronald, and Carol Ann Libby; grandchildren Stephen Prescott Jr., and his wife, Kristina, Joshua Prescott, Nicholas Peddle, and Christine Peddle; great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Audrey, Dominic, Grayson, and Bentley. She is also survived by niece Debbie Dexter, nephew David Dexter, great-niece Amelia, and great-nephews Andrew, Thomas, Matthew, and Samuel. She was predeceased by her parents, Clifton and Margaret (Cummings) Libby. The family would like to extend thanks and appreciation to the staff at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their loving care of Cathleen. Services for Cathleen will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Cathleen's name may be made to Hospice of Southern Maine, 180 US Route One, Scarborough, ME 04074 or Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, 784 Hercules Dr., Suite 110, Colchester, VT 05446.
