Carolyn M. (Phillips) Leavitt of Gray, Maine, passed away at the age of 90 on February 21, 2025. She was born on November 3, 1934, in Westbrook, Maine, the daughter of Paul and Ruth (Cobb) Phillips Sr. Carolyn grew up in Westbrook and graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1957. She married Keith E. Leavitt and together they lived in Portland for many years before moving to Gray. Carolyn's passion for education was evident in her 41 years of teaching in Portland schools, with most of those years teaching at Nathan Clifford in Portland. She loved to read and help children learn to read. Carolyn was an active member of her local community, participating in organizations such as the Girl Scouts and Rainbow Girls and as a Campfire Girls co-leader. She was also a dedicated member of the Westbrook Women's Club, MEA, and NEA, serving on many boards. Carolyn was very active in Church, both at Woodfords Congregational and later at North Deering Congregational. She enjoyed spending time with her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren and watching as they participated in sports and activities. She was also especially fond of her adopted senior cat Simba. Carolyn loved to travel and spend time at the lake. She loved to share stories with people whether it was over the phone, sitting on the porch, going for a boat ride or going out to lunch with "the girls". She loved flowers, watching the birds, listening to music, and impromptu "tea parties". Her kindness, support, and love for her family and friends will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Carolyn is survived by her daughter Susan L. Black and son-in-law Christopher A. Black of Gray and Granddaughter Jamie L. Everett and her husband James "JJ" Everett (Orange Park, FL) and Grandson Devin Black (Windham) as well as her Sister-in-law Kathryn Phillips, her great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Keith E. Leavitt, grandson Ryan P. Fogg, brothers Paul Phillips Jr. and Edward Phillips and so many beloved friends, in-laws and cousins. A graveside service for family and close friends will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery (Section 18) in Westbrook on June 21st at 11:00am.
