Portland, ME--Candace Tibbetts Cottrell passed away on Wednesday surrounded by family at the age of 74. She was born in Rangeley to Verd Russell and Florence Gertrude Tibbetts. She spent her childhood raising hell in Rangeley as the hardware store owner's daughter, where she learned how to fish, drive too fast on back country roads, and how to speak her mind. Perhaps because of her exuberance and outgoing nature, Candy was the local child chosen to ceremonially gift a Rangeley fawn to President Eisenhower for the Washington D.C. Zoo in 1955. A few years later Candy followed the fawn to Washington, D.C. to study art. While her time in school was short, she continued to enjoy drawing throughout her life. Candy, along with her parents, sister (Patricia McConkey), and friends formed a tight knit community in Rangeley. It was there that she met her loving husband, John, whose family was involved with Mingo Springs Golf Course. The two were married in 1964 and moved to Portland where they have remained. John worked as a traveling insulation salesman with accounts across the northeast, while Candy worked 15 years at TD Bank performing a variety of roles during her tenure. The couple raised two wonderful men, John and Andy, and positively enriched her grandchildren's lives as well. Candy taught all of them the basics in life: how to make and take jokes and punches, how to cheer on and critique Boston sports teams, how to carry oneself with integrity, and how to care for others. She was the center of a sprawling network of people for whom she cared deeply. With her quick wit, curious nature, and kind demeanor she would often find herself swapping stories with strangers. She shared countless hours of laughter and deep, meaningful conversation over cups of coffee with the ones she loved. Candy is survived by her husband, John; one of her sons, Andrew (spouse Rachel); and her 5 grandchildren: Katherine, Matt, Alex, Peyton and Carter. A memorial gathering will be held at the family home on Saturday, June 24th in the afternoon. An internment service will be held on Monday, June 26th at 3 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery.
