Gorham - Calvin H. Hamblen, 84, passed away quietly Sunday, May 15, 2016 in his home on the Hamblen family farm due to complications associated with Parkinson's disease. He was a proud veteran of the USMC, father of three, grandfather of twelve and great grandfather of one. He was born June 18, 1931 in Gorham, a son of Joseph Sr. and Nellie Elkins Hamblen and the youngest of seven children. Calvin was educated in Gorham school system and after graduation joined the Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War. Following his service, Calvin attended Northeastern University and began to pursue public accounting. He received his CPA designation in 1968 and spent most of his career self-employed. Calvin was very involved in his community. He was elected to five terms on the Gorham Town Council and served as the chairman for more than 3 years. He was also elected to the 106th Legislature in Maine. During that time he was a member of the Committee on Business Legislation, and Chairman of the Cumberland County Budget Review Committee. He was a member of the Gorham Farmers Club, the Gorham Lions Club, the White Rock Grange and the Gorham Historical society. He was also a member of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Calvin spent most of his life on the Hamblen family farm, which has been in the family since 1783. The farm was named a National Bicentennial Farm while under his care; one of only three farms in Cumberland County to be owned by the same family for over 200 years. He raised Hereford cattle, chickens, and cared for a colony of barn cats. He hayed in the summer, and made wine and maple syrup in the spring. He tended to a vegetable garden as well. He passed these skills to his children, and then to his grandchildren. Calvin's home evidenced his love of antiques and family, with his collection displayed alongside photos of his relatives. Calvin was a man who embraced traditional values. He worked hard, served his country, and loved his family and his farm. He was active in his community and he will be greatly missed by those who loved him. He is survived by Vietta Hamblen who lovingly cared for him in his final years; his brother, Almery Hamblen; and sister Ida Dolan; children Robert Hamblen and wife Jane Hamblen, Denise Kuntz and husband Mark Kuntz, Charles Hamblen and wife Deidre Hamblen; grandchildren David Kuntz, Laurel Daniels, Chanchala Hamblen, Emily Hamblen, Rachel Kuntz, Hanna Hamblen, Calvin Kuntz, Madeleine Hamblen, Grant Hamblen, Walker Kuntz, and one great grandchild, Daphne Daniels. A memorial service will be held on June 6, 2016 at 4PM on the farm, 26 Hamblen Rd., Gorham. Visitation will be held from 3pm until the time of the service at 4pm.
