Bruce Douglas McKay of Windham died peacefully after a long illness on the night of October 21, 2024. He was born April 24, 1952 in Portland, the son of the late Floyd Erving and Ella Francis (Rooney) McKay of Portland. Bruce graduated from Deering High School, Class of 1971. After graduation, Bruce briefly attended the Androscoggin School of Business and enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he served from 1972 until 1981, reaching the rank of E5. In 1972, Bruce met Sharon Lorraine Weeks of Windham at Happy Wheels roller-skating rink. They married in 1973 and were married for nearly 51 years. From 1971 to 1989, Bruce worked variously in semiconductor assembly, as a bus driver in the town of Freeport, in construction, and in steel fabrication. From 1989 to 2020, he worked as a pipefitter at Bath Iron Works. He greatly enjoyed and took pride in his work. More than anything except family, Bruce loved classic cars, followed closely by the Beach Boys, A&W root beer, photography, bargain hunting at yard sales, building model cars, genre fiction, clan heraldry, and tinkering with electronics. He also loved animals, a good chat, and eating. Bruce was predeceased by his two parents. Surviving in addition to his wife, Sharon (Weeks) McKay, are his wife's parents, Ralph and Jean Weeks, of Windham; her sister, Debbie (Weeks) Cormier, and her husband Richard, of Florida; her sister, Diane (Weeks) Minott, and husband Bob, also of Florida; her brother, David Weeks, and his wife Julie, of Windham; their daughter, Anita McKay, of Maine, and son, Scott McKay, of New York; four grandchildren, Kiersten and Ian McKay, and Lucia and Neil McKay; one sister, Nancy Piontkowski, and her husband, Paul, of Florida; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank especially the staff and residents of Wayside Garden and Genesis Springbrook for the loving care and companionship that Bruce enjoyed while there. A private ceremony will be held in lieu of a formal funeral. Those who wish may make donations in Bruce's name to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
