Obituary

WIndham Bruce Vincent Avery, 56, passed on December 13, 2016, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, after a courageous journey with Multiple System Atrophy - Cerebellum, surrounded by his wife, Eileen, and three children, Patrick, Nicole, and Samantha. Bruce was born on December 12, 1960 in New London, New Hampshire, the son of Arnold and Patricia Avery of Windham, Maine. Bruce graduated from Bonny Eagle High School, class of 1978. He attended the University of Southern Maine and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre. Bruce left to pursue a career in Los Angeles, California, working as a tour guide at Universal Studios and President of the local IATSE Union representing hundreds of tour personnel. His high school sweetheart, Eileen Sanborn, moved to Los Angeles to join him, and they were married in 1985. Upon the birth of their son, Patrick, in 1989, Bruce and Eileen decided to return to Maine to raise their family. Bruce represented the voters of Standish as Town Councilor and School Board Member for MSAD #6 for many years. He also ran for State Representative and loved the political arena. Bruce's greatest passion was Theatre and he taught, acted in and directed plays for many years at The Schoolhouse Arts Center at Sebago Lake and at Gorham High School. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Eileen, are Bruce's three children, Patrick Avery, Nicole Costa, and Samantha Avery. His first grandchild, Cole Costa, was born on July 30, 2016, and brought hours of joy to Bruce. His parents, Arnold B. and Patricia L. Avery of Windham, Maine. His siblings, Douglas Avery, Deborah Josephson and Kathy Avery - Varney. His father-in-law, Stanley E. Sanborn, and mother-in-law, Judith A. Sanborn, also of Standish. He is also survived by many Aunts, Uncles, cousins, friends and loved ones that were a huge and important part of his life. Visiting hours will be held from 5:00 – 8:00PM Friday, December 16, at the Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Rd, Windham. A Celebration of his Life will be held, 11:00AM Saturday, December 17, at the North Windham Union Church, 723 Roosevelt Trail, Windham. Interment will be in the Spring at Arlington Cemetery in North Windham. In lieu of flowers, we suggest a gift to Hospice of Southern Maine.
