Obituary

GORHAM-- Brenton R. Crossman, 92, passed away peacefully at Gosnell Memorial Hospice on Wednesday March 28, 2018. He was the son of Cedric and Charlotte (Greenlaw) Crossman. He was born and grew up in and around Princeton Maine. Brenton spent several years in the navy during World War II. On a destroyer off the beach at Normandy he saw the invasion of Europe begin. He traveled far and wide both in the service and out until his marriage in 1949. On July 23, 1949 he married Dorothy Johnson in a lovely afternoon ceremony. They were married at the Peoples Methodist Church in South Portland by the reverend H. Travers Smith. The day their first child was born he was recalled into the navy for the Korean War and spent two years overseas. For 42 years he worked for Young's Auto Radiator Works in Portland, Maine. He then went to work for Ability Radiator for another 8 years, taking many of his customers with him. People came from all over the state to have him repair their radiators because of his reputation and the quality of his work. Dad was always a handyman around the house and spent much of his free time working on whichever house we were living in at the time. He was always painting, papering or remodeling something. However his greatest enjoyment was being out on the ocean, fishing. For many years he had various boats and he constantly worked at keeping them seaworthy. He and mom spent many a weekend afternoon on the ocean. After his retirement in 1995, dad and mom sold their house on Alder Street in South Portland and moved to an apartment in Gorham, Maine. There dad spent much of his time fixing all the little problems that arose at the apartments and helping his children with any projects they might have. Bored, he went to work for Hannaford and spent 2 years bagging groceries in their Scarborough store before transferring to their Gorham store where he spent another 11 years. He finally retired at age 83 to take care of the love of his life, Dorothy, who predeceased him in 2015. Through it all he was an active member of First Parish Church in Gorham. In 2013 dad moved to the Inn at Village Square in Gorham where he could still get to church and be close to his family. I can't say thank you enough to the staff at the Inn for the wonderful care that he received there. He is survived by his children: daughter, Bonnie Schucker and husband Bruce, sons, Richard Crossman and wife Chris, Scott Crossman and wife Rose, Reid Crossman and wife Karen. grandchildren: Jason Schucker and wife Naomi, Joshua Schucker, Rori Crossman and partner Nick Dargie, Brent Crossman and wife Cheri, Ian Crossman and partner Melissa Jackson, Justin Crossman and wife Sara, Seth Crossman, Mark Crossman, and Gretchen Crossman. great grandchildren: Nora and Grace Schucker, McKenzie, Garrett, & Landyn Crossman, Skylar Crossman, and Avery and Ethan Crossman. He is also survived by his brother William Crossman and wife Lucinda. A period of visitation will be held on Tuesday April 3, 2018, from 1 pm until the time of the funeral service at 2 pm at First Parish Congregational Church, 1 Church St. Gorham. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland. Immediately following the service there will be a celebration for family and friends at the home of Bonnie Schucker. In lieu of flowers a contribution in honor of Brenton Crossman can be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 3049, Syracuse, NY 13220. Arrangements are in the care of the Gorham Chapel of Dolby Blais & Segee, 76 State St., Gorham, ME 04038.
