Obituary

Betty Faye Stone, 81 years of age and a resident of Naples, Maine passed on Thursday, October 6, 2022, from complications of cancer. Family members were by her side. Betty was born August 8, 1941, in Cranberry Isles, Maine to the late Hervey and Thelma Spurling. The Spurling family has a rich history on Cranberry Isles all the way back to one of the first families inhabiting the Isles in the early 1700s. Betty's family eventually moved to Ellsworth, Maine where she was schooled and graduated from High School in 1958. Shortly thereafter, Betty met the love of her life and partner in life, Arnie Stone. Married in September of 1962, they were happily so for 50 years prior to Arnie's death in February 2013. While Betty worked for the Community Observer newspaper for a short time, her focus moved to her family of four children. She engaged actively in the children's activities and especially loved to attend their sporting events. Betty was both simple and sly – not to ever be underestimated. Underneath the quiet exterior was an active thinker with a larger heart than you might imagine. She found pleasure in all animals – domestic and wild, gardening, fishing, playing cards, and going to the dancehall with Arnie. Her gardens were amazing, always caught the most fish, was a sneaky good poker player, and she and Arnie could cut up a rug quite nicely. Betty is survived by three of her children, Tammy Branca of East Machias, Maine, Harold Robert Stone of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Christy Sanborn of Trenton, Maine, and Nine grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Beyond Arnie Stone, Betty is predeceased by her son, Allan Stone, and her siblings from Cranberry Isles have since passed. Betty was a lover of animals and appreciated animal shelters, often acquiring pets – sometimes too many cats at one time. If inclined, a donation to this shelter recognizing Mom would be wonderful: https://secure.northeastanimalshelter.org/donations/memorial-tribute/ Betty and Arnie's wishes was to have a joint service to celebrate and continue the reunion. This will be held in the Spring when the flowers are blooming in Brewer, Maine their home base. The details for this service will be published at another point in time.
