RAYMOND-- Betty Yvonne McDermott, 83, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2018 surrounded by family while at her winter residence in Phoenix, Arizona. Daughter of John and Hazel (Blake) Files, she was born at home on the Penny Road in New Gloucester, Maine on May 28, 1934, the same day as the famed Dionne quintuplets from which she derived her middle name. She lived the first 12 years of her life in Gray and New Gloucester before moving to South Portland. She graduated from South Portland HS in 1953 and was working as a hostess at Ted's Lobster House in Portland where she met, and in 1954, married, Nicholas Pitarys. They had 3 children, George, Nicholas Jr, and Melanie before Nick's untimely death in 1965. The family moved from Portland to Raymond in 1960. In 1968 she married Francis (Frank) McDermott the Principal of the Raymond school system, and Frank's infant son, Christopher became her fourth child. The family soon became complete with the addition of daughter Cynthia. For several years she was employed at Windham High School as a Teachers Aide and Attendance Officer where she made lasting friendships with many of the young students. Throughout her years as a Raymond resident she was active in numerous civic affairs. For 33 years she was treasurer of the Raymond Woman's Club, which built and supported the Raymond Public Library. She was a Charter Member and served as treasurer for the Raymond Lions Club and received the "National Melvin Jones Lions Award" in 2007. Additionally, she was deeply involved in the Raymond-Casco Historical Society as a Charter Member, serving as treasurer for many years. She was active in town politics as well, serving on the Appeals Board for 15 years, as Ballot Clerk and Election Warden for 22 years, Selectman for 9 years and Chairman for two terms. She was also a member of the Hawthorne Garden Club. Among her passions was the study of her family's genealogy. She was a proud member of The Mayflower Society, being able to trace her ancestry on both sides of her family to that ship. Uppermost in her mind was binding the family together and she often instigated get-togethers on the flimsiest of excuses. The strongest tradition was the annual family Thanksgiving which often saw 30 or more friends and relatives gathering at the house in Raymond. She was predeceased by her parents and younger brother Donald, and is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Frank, son George Pitarys and his wife Candy, son Nicholas Pitarys and his wife Chrystal, daughter Melanie Tornberg and her husband Anders, son Christopher McDermott and his wife Paula, and daughter Cynthia McClelland and her husband Patrick; her siblings, Beverly Coyne, John R Files and Barbara Files; grandchildren Artemis and Thor Tornberg, Addison McDermott, Brianna McClelland, Russell and Jodi Howell, and great grandchildren Xavier, Hunter and Olivia Howell, along with countless nieces and nephews.
