Bernard was born April 4, 1930, in St. Stephens, New Brunswick, Canada to Louis Wilder and May Rogerson Gardner. He was born in Canada because there was no hospital in the small Maine town they were living in. His mother passed away when he was 16 months old and he was raised in Worcester, MA by a loving Aunt and Uncle, Edith and George Merriam. He went to High School at Good-Will Hinckley in Hinckley, ME. He had many fond memories of his time there. He graduated from the University of Maine-Orono with degrees in Agricultural and Mechanical Engineering. He joined the Army in 1952 and graduated from Officer Candidate School as a 2nd Lieutenant. While in the service he married Phyllis Jean Bruce. Following his graduation from OCS he returned to the University of Maine-Orono for further education. He supported his family working as an engineer for Allis-Chalmers, General Electric, Data General and Bath Iron Works. He provided service, was an organist and leader, for many years in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He loved music and it showed. He passed that talent and love on to his daughters, some grandchildren and now a great-grandson. Another great love was genealogy. He did research for many decades. Reading and traveling rounded out his hobbies. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis, daughters Kimberly Regan (Kenneth), Kerry Green (Richard, Jr.), Heather Johnson and Melodie Foster (Hank), grandchildren Courtney Johnson Howard, Shannon Regan Warner, Nikole Green Anthony, Caitlin Regan, David Johnson, Bubba Green and Elizabeth Foster Lavasseur; great-grandchildren Jackson, Caroline, Bracey and Whitt Howard; Maya, Addison and Enna Warner; Makenzie and Benjamin Anthony; Savannah and Will Johnson; Connor, Parker and Jaxon Lavasseur.
