Westbrook – Barbara Leona Hawkes, 86, passed away at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on Monday, December 3, 2018. The daughter of Maurice and Gladys (Keeler) Keene, she was born in South Portland on July 17, 1932. She grew up in Westbrook and attended Westbrook schools. Her family moved to Gray where she attended her senior year of high school and graduated from Pennell Institute. She was known for her strong work ethic which started when she was 10 years old working on area farms; then cleaning homes. After graduation from High School she worked as a Nanny for a Doctor, in Cape Elizabeth. After the children were all in school she went on to work as a telephone operator at Rines Brothers in Portland. While living in Westbrook she developed a crush on a boy who lived in the neighborhood, Al Hawkes. One day he invited to her to go fishing with him and she caught all the fish. Al loved chasing her around the dam and pushing her into the water. When she was a teenager she told him "I'm going to marry you someday" and after they were grown; the two were wed in 1952. When she married Al, they started Hawkes TV repair shop & then opened Event Recording Studio. In 1990 when they closed Hawkes Television & The Sound Cellar, Barbara went to work for Millbrook Nurseries working in the outdoors with flowers & plants which brought her great joy. During this time she went to the Maine Job Service to learn computers and did so well was asked to stay and work as a secretary for the unemployment appeals court. After a while, she decided to run for City Clerk of Westbrook, which was an elected position at the time. She was elected and served as the City Clerk for 14 years retiring at 75. Barbara belonged to the Westbrook Business & Professional Women's Club (BPW), serving multiple terms as President. She also belonged to the Highland Lake Grange and enjoyed helping her father in law with Beano. She was a member of the Highland Lake Congregational Church and United Commercial Travelers Club (UCT). Barbara enjoyed working in her flower gardens, watching the birds at their feeders, camping & hiking in the White Mountains, going to the beach with her daughter, riding dirt & road bikes with Al & their son Frank and was an avid reader. Barbara was predeceased by her son Franklin Hawkes, her brother Ervin Keene and her sisters Betty Moody & Ruth Harradon. She is survived by her husband Al of 66 years, her daughter Darleen "Dar" Doughty and her husband John of Windham, her brothers Norman Keene and his wife Carlene and Russell Keene and his wife Elaine, her grandson Matthew Boullie and his wife Melissa, her Great Grandson Damian Boullie, and her great granddaughters Autumn, Makayla, Isabelle and Hailey Boullie. Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Saturday, December 15, 2018 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St. Westbrook. A service will follow at 12:00 PM with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be at Highland Lake Cemetery in the spring. Arrangements are under the care of the Westbrook Chapel of Dolby, Blais & Segee.
