WINDHAM - Barbara L. Chandler, 91, of Windham, Maine, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Stroudwater Lodge in Westbrook, Maine. Barbara was born September 3, 1931 in Brunswick, Maine to the late Harold and Anne (later Darey) Travis, Sr. She graduated from Brownville Junction High School in 1948 with high honors. In her time there she enjoyed cheerleading and playing the drums. Barbara delighted sharing the story of meeting Lloyd, her beloved future husband, on a double blind date where they were paired up, but not with each other! It was love at first sight, and they were married within a month of meeting. Barbara and Lloyd went on to enjoy a long, loving marriage of more than 63 years until his passing in 2014. Early on in their married years, Barbara and Lloyd moved to a small family farm on Ocean Avenue in Portland, where they began their family. While Lloyd often worked two jobs to make ends meet, Barbara cared for the home and family, overseeing the daily care of family and livestock, as well as harvesting and preserving the fresh vegetables raised in the family garden. Barbara and Lloyd later moved the family to Hamlin Road in Falmouth where they continued to raise their family and befriended many neighbors who turned into life-long friends. In 1965, having successfully raised three children, Barbara decided to reenter the work force and applied for a position at what was then, Portland Savings Bank. She began what would be a long, highly successful career with the bank, and attended and graduated from Maine-New Hampshire School of Savings Banking. In her over 25 years with Portland Savings Bank, she moved from an entry level teller position to being elected the first female Assistant Vice President of what was later Peoples Heritage Bank and known today as TD Bank, until her retirement. After her retirement, Barbara and Lloyd moved on to their next life adventure as snowbirds wintering at their beloved Bonita Beach home in Bonita Springs, Florida where they enjoyed the sunshine and a wonderful social life; summering on Brandy Pond in Naples, Maine. Together was Barbara and Lloyd's favorite place to be, and together they enjoyed spending time with family, hunting, traveling with friends, and especially enjoyed going for rides on the back roads of Maine, never having a destination. During one of those trips, Barbara and Lloyd found and fell in love with a one-room cabin on David Pond in Fayette, which they bought and, over time, transformed into a beautiful home where family and friends gathered for holidays, birthdays and special events for over 30 years. They later delighted in sharing their little piece of paradise with their grandchildren where they enjoyed boating, swimming and other activities. After Lloyd's passing in 2014, Barbara resided with Lloyd Jr. where she especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Barbara was lovingly known to most as "Ma", "Nana" or later simply "Nan". Besides her beloved husband Lloyd and her parents, Barbara was also predeceased by her stepfather Robert Darey, a sister Jean Babb, and a brother Harold Travis, Jr. Surviving Barbara are her children, Sandra Cleveland and her husband David, of Raymond; Kathy Johnston of Windham; and Lloyd Chandler Jr., and his wife Stacy, of Windham. She is also survived by a brother, Paul Travis, sister in law Penny Travis; grandchildren, Melanie, Anthony, Jessica, Arthur, Alicia, and Kaitlyn; great-grandchildren Autumn, Quincy, Caleb, Lexi, Alianna, Liam, Mallory, Emily and Karleigh; and several nieces and nephews. Barbara's family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the staff of Stroudwater Lodge for the compassionate and loving care and always striving to enrich Barbara's time at the Lodge. And a special thank you to Gentiva Hospice of Portland for their comforting care. Graveside services to be held in the spring for Lloyd, Barbara and their beloved cat, Molly. In memory of Barbara, donations can be made to The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, PO Box 336, Westbrook, Maine or another charity of your choice.
